Senior Data & AI Engineer, Upstream Oil & Gas

Blue River Analytics is seeking experienced contract engineers to help upstream oil and gas companies move reporting and analysis workflows from traditional BI tools to AI-powered applications. The role connects and reconciles upstream data, preserves existing business logic, and builds, validates, deploys, and supports reusable data models and AI-enabled workflows.

Responsibilities:

• Connect data from production, accounting, reserves, economics, and engineering systems, including databases, APIs, and Excel
• Resolve practical data issues such as inconsistent well identifiers, missing records, conflicting definitions, units, and reporting periods
• Extract and document calculations, transformations, and business rules embedded in Spotfire, Power BI, and existing reporting workflows
• Build reusable data models and calculation services that support AI applications and reporting
• Connect Claude, ChatGPT, or Microsoft AI tools to approved customer data and functions
• Build usable interfaces, reports, and workflows for engineers and business users
• Validate results against agreed reference calculations and existing reports
• Deploy, document, and support the solution, including access controls, refreshes, and troubleshooting

Requirements:

• Direct upstream oil and gas experience and hands-on work with upstream data are mandatory
• Direct experience working in upstream oil and gas with real operational or engineering datasets
• Strong SQL and Python skills
• Hands-on experience building data pipelines, API integrations, and reliable refresh processes
• Experience delivering AI applications connected to business data beyond standalone chatbot demonstrations
• Ability to explain where calculations run, how business context is supplied, and how results are verified
• Ability to take a scoped project from requirements through deployment and handover
• Clear communication and comfort working directly with customers and domain experts
• You should understand the data considerations relevant to your upstream experience, such as well and completion identifiers, daily versus monthly production, allocated volumes, gross versus net interests, forecast versions, and accounting periods
• General data engineering experience without upstream oil and gas data experience will not meet the requirements for this role
• Microsoft SQL Server, Azure SQL, or Microsoft Fabric
• Snowflake or Databricks
• Spotfire or Power BI development, including calculated expressions or DAX
• Experience with systems such as Enverus, ComboCurve, ARIES, PHDWin, or upstream production and accounting platforms
• Experience with tool calling, MCP, or other methods of connecting AI applications to controlled queries and business functions
