Software Engineer

Evans Sternau CPA is hiring its first in-house engineer to develop and maintain internal applications that support the firm. The role will connect those applications with the firm’s existing systems and own work end to end, from understanding accountants’ needs through shipping and support.

Responsibilities:

• You will be our first in-house engineer and the person who turns a set of early internal tools into a cohesive platform
• In this role, you will report directly to the Managing Partner and work with him to build and maintain the internal applications that run the firm, and connect them to the systems we already use: Karbon (practice management), Ignition (proposals and billing), QuickBooks Online, and Microsoft 365
• You will not get a large engineering team or a lot of ceremony: you own your work end to end, from understanding what the accountants need to shipping and supporting it

Requirements:

• 3–6 years of professional software development, with at least one full-stack web application you built and ran in production
• Strong in a modern backend language (TypeScript/Node or Python preferred) and a modern front-end framework (React or similar)
• Hands-on experience integrating third-party SaaS APIs (REST, OAuth, webhooks) and keeping data in sync between systems
• Comfortable with relational databases and data modeling; you can design a schema and write the SQL
• Experience deploying and operating applications on a major cloud (Azure preferred; AWS or GCP fine)
• Have built something with an LLM API (Anthropic, OpenAI, or similar) beyond a chat wrapper
• Clear written and spoken communication with non-technical colleagues; you ask good questions before building
• Care about security and confidentiality; comfortable working under SOC 2-style controls
• Authorized to work in the United States
