Provide legal advice on construction procurement, tendering, and project delivery models
Draft, review, and negotiate construction, engineering, and consultant agreements
Advise on contract structures, risk management, liabilities, and mitigation strategies providing advice and options which consider legal, business and political interests and industry practices
Support clients delivering projects across water, wastewater, waste management, transportation, social housing facilities, and other municipal infrastructure services
Manage and provide advice on construction disputes, including: Liens, Compliance with the Construction Act, Delay, deficiency and contract default claims, Extras and change-order matters, Utility conflicts or damage to utilities
Provide strategic legal opinions to leadership and project teams
Collaborate with internal departments and external partners including consultants, and utility owners,
Keep up to date with legislative developments in Construction law and advise accordingly
Conduct construction adjudications, tribunal appearances and litigation as required including examinations for discovery, motions, pretrials, mediations and trials
Identify the need for and participate in continuous process improvement opportunities both for client teams and in Legal Services
Manage files of varying degrees of complexity, importance, and urgency and remain responsive to client requests.
Requirements
Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or Juris Doctor (JD) degree
10+ years of relevant Legal Experience
Called to the Ontario Bar and membership in good standing
Strong background in construction law
Experience with municipal, public sector, or infrastructure projects is an asset.
