Provides advanced legal and administrative support, including assisting in the investigation, management, and defense of medical malpractice claims and lawsuits
Preparing legal documents; organizing case materials and maintaining litigation data
Ensuring timely and accurate communication between internal and external stakeholders
Collaborates closely with in-house counsel, outside defense counsel, and leaders across Risk Management, Quality, Patient Safety, and Insurance Services
Provides comprehensive litigation support to in-house and outside counsel in managing medical malpractice claims and lawsuits
Drafts, proofreads, and prepares legal correspondence, pleadings, discovery requests and responses, and subpoenas
Reviews and summarizes medical records, depositions, and expert reports
Organizes, maintains, and updates electronic and paper case files, including medical records and exhibits
Coordinates the collection, review, and production of documents for discovery and subpoenas, ensuring compliance with applicable privacy and confidentiality standards
Maintains accurate case data in Emory's claims management system, generates reports and assists with claims analytics
Tracks litigation deadlines, hearings, and other case milestones to ensure compliance with court rules and procedures
Supports trial preparation, including assembly of exhibits, witness lists, and trial binders
Communicates effectively with internal departments, outside counsel, insurance representatives, and other stakeholders
Assists attorneys with special projects, audits, and administrative tasks, as needed
Requirements
Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education, training and experience
Five years of experience as a paralegal in civil litigation, preferably in medical malpractice, healthcare law, or insurance defense
Paralegal certificate from an accredited program preferred
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and case management software
Strong understanding of litigation processes, document management, and legal terminology
Exceptional organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion in handling sensitive information
The ability to manage complex, high-volume cases within a large academic healthcare environment
