Occupational Therapist

Role Overview

• To competently interpret the patients history and baseline level of function and then to complete an assessment appropriate to the patients areas of deficits.
• Establishes and carries out a plan of care to include patient treatment and reassessment, patient/family instruction, discharge planning, documentation in the medical record and communication with physicians and other medical staff.
• Driving is an essential function of the job.
• 90% Direct Patient Care
• Evaluates and treats patients after physician referral.
• Develops and implements plan of care based on evaluation findings and appropriate treatment techniques.
• Implements plan of care based on appropriate occupational performance frame of reference(s): bio-mechanical, sensorimotor, and/or rehabilitative.
• Attends multidisciplinary patient care meetings.
• Plans and coordinates discharge plan with multidisciplinary team.
• Educates patient and caregiver/family.
• Recommends Medical Equipment required for discharge.
• Provides information to physicians, nurses, case managers, social workers, and other team members.
• 5% Documents evaluation, plan of care, progress toward goals, discharge plan/continuity of care for multidisciplinary team, and other involved medical and insurance parties.
• 5% Indirect Department Functions: Supervises patient assignments and duties of Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants (COTA) and rehab technicians. Is involved in department quality improvement through utilization review and quality assurance program.
• Takes active role in orienting new staff members. Serves as clinical instructor for OT and COTA students. Educates other disciplines and medical/hospital personnel on the topic of OT purpose, goals and treatment policies and procedures.
• Represents department at problem-solving and committee meetings. Assumes other duties delegated by management.
