About this role
Role Overview
Lead and support the design of advanced HVAC and thermal systems for buildings with high operational, reliability, and performance requirements.
Develop system concepts, calculations, and design strategies that address redundancy, maintainability, and life cycle outcomes, not just code compliance.
Solve non-standard engineering problems where precedent solutions may not apply.
Apply sound engineering judgment to evaluate competing system approaches and tradeoffs.
Support projects involving central plants, shared mechanical systems, or campus scale infrastructure when applicable.
Evaluate system strategies such as central heating and cooling plants, heat recovery, thermal energy storage, and large-scale electrification.
Integrate decarbonization goals into mechanical system design, including electrification, efficiency improvements, and low carbon system selection.
Collaborate with sustainability and building science teams to align mechanical strategies with energy and emissions performance targets.
Support early stage analysis to help clients understand technical and operational implications of decarbonization pathways.
Work closely with architects, electrical engineers, and other disciplines to develop coordinated, technically sound designs.
Contribute to technical narratives and client deliverables that clearly explain system rationale and performance implications.
Communicate complex engineering concepts in a clear, practical manner to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Stay current with evolving technologies, codes, and best practices related to complex mechanical systems and building decarbonization.
Contribute to internal standards, tools, and knowledge development as BranchPattern advances its energy and systems expertise.
Mentor junior engineers and support a culture of technical rigor and curiosity.
Requirements
Licensed Professional Engineer (PE), or ability to obtain licensure
5+ years of experience designing and analyzing complex mechanical systems for buildings
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Architectural Engineering
Experience with technically demanding facilities such as healthcare, laboratories, or other mission critical environments
Strong interest in decarbonization, system efficiency, and performance driven design.
