Responsible for leading the strategy, design, and governance of health and welfare, wellness, leave of absence, and time off programs across the United States and Puerto Rico
Define and lead the multi-year benefits strategy for U.S. and Puerto Rico, aligned with total rewards philosophy and business objectives
Design forward-looking programs across health & welfare, wellness, leave of absence, and time off that enhance employee experience and market competitiveness
Continuously evaluate program effectiveness, cost trends, and utilization to inform strategy evolution
Work closely with internal stakeholders and external consultants to bring awareness to benefit strategy
Partner with finance on budget, accrual and forecasting of self-funded plans
Drive a cohesive employee experience across benefits, ensuring simplicity, accessibility, and engagement
Standardize and modernize programs where appropriate to improve consistency and employee understanding
Establish governance frameworks to ensure consistency, scalability, and operational excellence across all benefit programs
Partner with finance and leadership to manage benefits spend, forecast trends, and identify cost optimization opportunities
Oversee vendor strategy, including selection, performance management, and innovation partnerships
Ensure all programs comply with applicable federal, state, and Puerto Rico regulations (e.g., ERISA, ACA, FMLA, local leave laws)
Monitor legislative changes and proactively adjust program design to mitigate risk
Serve as a strategic advisor to HR leadership and senior business stakeholders on benefits-related matters
Collaborate cross-functionally (HRBPs, Legal, Finance, Payroll, Communications) to ensure alignment and execution
Lead and develop a high-performing team (if applicable), fostering strategic thinking and continuous improvement.
Requirements
Doctorate degree and 2 years of benefits experience OR Master’s degree and 4 years of benefits experience OR Bachelor’s degree and 6 years benefits experience OR Associate’s degree and 10 years of benefits experience OR High school diploma / GED and 12 years of benefits experience
Advanced degree or relevant certification (e.g., CEBS)
8–12+ years of progressive experience in benefits, with significant focus on strategy and program design
Deep expertise in U.S. health & welfare programs; working knowledge of Puerto Rico benefits and regulatory landscape
Proven ability to lead large-scale benefits strategy, including cost management and vendor ecosystems
Strong understanding of compliance requirements (ERISA, ACA, FMLA, and related regulations)
Demonstrated ability to influence senior leaders and operate in a complex, matrixed environment
Analytical mindset with the ability to translate data into actionable strategy
Strong communication and executive presence
Knowledge of and experience with fully insured and self funded plans.
