Researches, plans, designs and develops mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, thermal hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy
Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines
Provides technical oversight for shipbuilding manufacturing equipment and processes
Develops digital tools to support the manufacturing process and associated equipment
Develop cohesive working relationships with manufacturing operators and maintenance personnel
Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues within assigned equipment and system(s)
Provide engineering resolutions for system problems/configuration changes
Produce and oversee the development of technical documentation that govern the equipment design, configuration, and operation
Develop a long range strategic plan for improvements to assigned equipment and system(s)
Initiate and support the development/execution of planned maintenance requirements
Lead the resolution of unplanned events
Develop and maintain critical equipment/system metrics (Uptime/Downtime, Mean Time to Repair (MTTR), Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF),performance to design, PM Compliance, OEE, etc.)
Participate in project design and implementation process for equipment/system related projects
Oversee project/system testing to ensure system meets technical requirements and operates at peak performance
Requirements
Bachelor's Degree and 9 years of relevant exempt experience; Master’s Degree and 7 years of relevant professional experience; Ph.D. and 4 years of experience
Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program
Strong Interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written
Ability to think strategically, act tactically, work well with others, and support a safe and highly engaged work environment
Experience with personal computer applications, especially word processing and spreadsheet applications
Strong Analytic and problem solving skills
Experience with Flux Core Arc Welding (FCAW) and Gas Metal Arc Welding (GAMW) and SubArc Welding (SAW)
