Genetics Assistant – Genetics Counselling

Role Overview

• Prepare patient’s pedigrees; request past pedigrees from Medical Records as needed
• Providing patient health information to other professional staff
• Contacting families/physician/Laboratories for further information
• Manage incoming genetics test reports via laboratory and providers portals
• Receive and distribute all patient test results to team members
• Coordinating additional testing for patients following medical directives
• Tracking results and samples on patients using a database
• Sending and tracking Release of information consent forms
• Request variant reinterpretations from genetic labs
• Entering request for ministry of health extensions
• Sending letter’s/emails and faxes to patient’s and professional staff
• High accuracy and attention to detail when performing a wide variety of tasks
• Performing all other duties consistent with the Genetic Assistant role as assigned

Requirements

• BSc. In Biology or Genetics preferred
• Knowledge of genetics principles and theory
• Attention to detail with strong written and verbal communication skills
• Excellent inter-personnel and customer service skills
• Ability to work as part of a team and independently. Professional and capable of developing effective working relationships
• Working knowledge of standard computer applications including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel). Experience in use of EPIC is an asset
• Well organized with effective prioritization and time management skills
• Previous related experience in a clinical genetics setting is an asset
