About this role
Role Overview
- Own the design of the map experience, with a focus on readability, accessibility, symbol design, and visual clarity for users of all ages.
- Design map symbols, icons, labels, POIs, route visuals, zoom-level behaviors, and visual hierarchy across the map.
- Work closely with map rendering engineers to create MapLibre-compatible design solutions.
- Improve the treatment of 3D buildings and map layers so the map is easier to understand.
- Create map-style guidelines, QA-implemented map designs, and document reusable rules for the rendering squad.
Requirements
- 5+ years of proven experience in product design, UX/UI, cartographic design, map design, GIS visualization, or spatial information design.
- A strong portfolio demonstrating expertise in map-based products, symbol design, visual hierarchy, readability, or complex data visualization.
- Deep understanding of cartographic design, symbol/icon design, color theory, contrast, typography, map readability, zoom-level behaviors, labels, layers, and POIs.
- Solid understanding of MapLibre/Mapbox-style map concepts.
- Strong systems thinking, close attention to detail, analytical thinking, and deep user empathy.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to balance aesthetics and user experience against performance and technical constraints.
