About this role
Role Overview
Responsible for the resolution of moderate to high complexity and moderate to high exposure claims
Handle claims from coverage enquiry through legal liability assessment and quantum analysis to timely and accurate resolution
Confirm coverage of claims by reviewing policies and documents submitted
Analyze coverage and communicates coverage positions
Prepare coverage position letters and refer suspicious losses to SIU
Conduct investigation into loss facts and extent of damages
Direct and monitor assignments to experts and outside counsel
Evaluate information on coverage, liability, and damages
Set reserves within authority or make claim recommendations concerning reserve changes
Negotiate and settle claims typically in litigation
Present at roundtables to senior claims leaders and underwriters on cases going to trial
Participate in special projects having an impact on the business
May be assigned project lead for larger projects
Represent Markel at mediations, trials, and conferences
Pull and analyze loss information for business stakeholders
Serve as a technical resource to underwriting and assist with drafting policy wording
Assist in training of new hires and provide assistance to others within claims department
Requirements
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience
JD , advanced degree, or focused technical degree a plus
Must have or be eligible to receive claims adjuster license
Successful achievement of industry designations (INS, IEA, AIC, ARM, SCLA, CPCU)
Minimum of 5 years of claims handling experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
Successful completion of 3 years as a Claims Examiner
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Strong analytical and problem solving skills
Strong organization and time management skills
Ability to work autonomously in a fast paced environment
Experience in negotiation, mediations and monitoring trials
Ability to influence claims stakeholders and to effectively direct claims strategy
Strong litigation management skills
Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office products (Excel, Outlook, Power Point, Word)
Knowledge of tort and contract law
Strong desire for continuous improvement
