Data Engineer Intern (Internship)

Abacus Insights is transforming healthcare data to improve decision-making for health plans. The Data Engineering Intern will collaborate with teams to support data extraction, analysis, and distribution from a cloud-based platform while gaining hands-on experience in a modern data engineering environment.

Responsibilities:

• Work with clients and implementation teams to understand data distribution requirements
• Perform data analysis and data mapping to support generation of client‑ready outputs
• Build and maintain data extract scripts with guidance from senior engineers
• Help optimize extract performance and troubleshoot issues
• Participate in a collaborative, high‑performing engineering culture
• Seek guidance from mentors and team members as you work through challenges
• Join client meetings as appropriate to understand requirements and project context
• Contribute ideas for improving processes, documentation, or workflow efficiency

Requirements:

• Foundational experience working with healthcare data (coursework, projects, other internships)
• Interest in and understanding of healthcare data domains (Membership, Claims, Provider, etc.)
• Ability to write SQL queries and perform data analysis, profiling, and reporting
• Curiosity about performance optimization and willingness to learn how to tune queries
• Comfort working with large data volumes
• Ability to communicate with both technical and non‑technical stakeholders
• Analytical mindset and interest in problem‑solving
• Willingness to learn new tools, technologies, and approaches
• Ability to work independently while knowing when to ask for help
• Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks
• Strong SQL skills or academic exposure to database concepts
• Exposure to cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Databricks
• Familiarity with Snowflake or similar cloud data warehouses
• Experience or curiosity about working with cloud‑based data services in healthcare environments
