Head of Underwriting Engineering & AI

Phaxis is partnering with a rapidly growing insurance technology company that is reimagining how underwriting is built, deployed, and scaled. They are seeking a technical leader to architect, code, and continuously improve the technology that drives underwriting performance, while leading a focused team of engineers.

Responsibilities:

• Architect and evolve underwriting technology platforms to support rapid company growth
• Lead a small, high-performing technical team while remaining hands-on in design and implementation
• Build, integrate, and optimize AI-driven workflows, data pipelines, and decision systems
• Own system configurations, automation logic, APIs, and platform integrations
• Improve underwriting speed and accuracy through intelligent workflow design
• Evaluate and execute build vs. buy vs. configure decisions with long-term scalability in mind
• Identify process bottlenecks and eliminate manual dependencies through automation
• Serve as the technical thought partner to underwriting, executive leadership, and external vendors
• Deliver measurable improvements in efficiency, performance, and revenue enablement
• Operate confidently in a fast-moving startup environment with evolving priorities

Requirements:

• Deep expertise in software engineering, architecture, and modern system design
• Strong coding and technical configuration capabilities
• Experience leading technical teams while remaining actively involved in execution
• Comfort working with AI-enabled platforms, automation tools, and modern data stacks
• Proven ability to translate business needs into scalable technical solutions
• Strong problem-solving instincts and comfort with ambiguity
• Operate confidently in a fast-moving startup environment with evolving priorities
• Startup or high-growth company experience
• Insurance or financial services experience is a plus, but strong technical leadership is essential
