Lead one of the world’s most influential institutes in bioengineering and nanotechnology
Drive research excellence, global partnerships and translation of discovery into impact
Shape the next chapter of innovation in health, energy and the bioeconomy
Hoffmann Reed has been exclusively engaged by The University of Queensland (UQ), one of Australia’s leading research and teaching institutions and consistently ranked among the world’s top universities. UQ is home to more than 57,000 students and a vibrant community of over 7,500 staff, supported by eight flagship research institutes and more than 100 research centres.
The Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (AIBN) is a globally recognised leader in interdisciplinary research, bringing together expertise in bioengineering and nanoscience to address some of the most pressing challenges facing society today. Since its establishment in 2004, AIBN has grown into one of the largest institutes of its kind internationally, with more than 300 researchers, professional staff and industry partners working collaboratively to translate discovery into practical solutions in areas such as health, sustainable energy and the bioeconomy. The Institute is committed to translating research discoveries into real-world applications, aligning with both national and global research priorities.
This is a rare opportunity to lead a globally recognised institute and guide its continued growth and impact.
Reporting to the Provost, the Institute Director provides strategic and academic leadership for AIBN and plays a key role in shaping the institute’s future as a world-leading centre for interdisciplinary research and innovation.
As a member of the University’s senior leadership community, the Institute Director will set the strategic vision, strengthen research excellence and impact, and foster a collaborative and inclusive culture that attracts and supports outstanding researchers at all career stages. The role also carries responsibility for advancing the translation and commercialisation of research, strengthening partnerships with industry, government and global collaborators, and ensuring the AIBN’s long-term financial and operational sustainability.
Working closely with university leadership, faculties, research institutes and external partners, the Institute Director will position AIBN to build on its existing strengths while identifying emerging opportunities that will shape the next generation of bioengineering and nanotechnology innovation.
You will be an internationally recognised research leader with the vision and capability to guide a complex, high-performing research institute toward its next stage of achievement.
The successful candidate will demonstrate:
A PhD in a relevant discipline and global recognition as a leading scientific authority
A distinguished research career with experience leading large and complex research organisations or programs
Proven capability to develop and lead multidisciplinary teams and drive innovation, translation and commercialisation of research
Strategic leadership experience in positioning and profiling research institutes or major research initiatives
Strong national and international networks across academia, industry, government and funding bodies
Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to influence, build partnerships and inspire high-performing teams.
