Lockheed Martin is a leader in aerospace and defense, and they are seeking an Electrical Engineer: Thermal Battery Subject Matter Expert. This role involves leading the technical direction of thermal battery design and development while collaborating with various teams to ensure the performance and reliability of missile systems.
Responsibilities:
- Provide expert guidance on thermal battery architecture, materials, and test methodologies throughout the product lifecycle
- Lead cross functional collaboration with engineering, manufacturing, quality, and supply chain teams to integrate battery solutions into the missile system
- Conduct root cause failure analyses, develop corrective action plans, and track implementation to improve reliability
- Review, comment on, and approve engineering change requests, technical reports, and test procedures to ensure compliance with program standards
- Evaluate supplier proposals-assessing cost, schedule, and technical merit-and make recommendations that balance risk and performance
- Assess non conformances, lead Material Review Board (MRB) dispositions, and drive corrective actions
- Work directly with suppliers to qualify new thermal battery designs, providing technical oversight and mentorship
- Communicate regularly with government customers to capture requirements, provide status updates, and deliver technical guidance
- Coordinate supplier activities in partnership with Sub Contracts Management to align with overall program milestones
- Support obsolescence planning, identifying replacement parts and mitigation strategies before they impact production
- Provide technical oversight of a major subcontractor, ensuring deliverables meet quality and schedule commitments
- Travel as needed to customer and supplier sites, both within the Continental United States (CONUS) and internationally, to validate designs and oversee critical reviews
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or Chemistry
- Minimum 4 years of experience in the design, development, and testing of thermal batteries
- In-depth knowledge of thermal battery chemistry, materials, design principles, production processes, and failure modes
- Experience with thermal battery testing and evaluation, including performance characterization and failure analysis
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex data and develop creative solutions
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to present technical data to internal and external stakeholders
- Proficient with Microsoft Office
- Ability to obtain a secret security clearance
- Advanced degree (Master's or Ph.D.) in a relevant field
- 8+ years of experience in the thermal battery industry
- Experience with thermal battery modeling and simulation tools
- Experience with MATLAB tools for data analysis and visualization
- Knowledge of analytical equipment used in the evaluation of battery materials and failure investigations, including DSC, TGA, SEM/EDX, and Karl Fischer titration
- Knowledge of government regulations and standards related to thermal batteries, such as NAVSEA S9310, RCC 319, and MIL-DTL-23659
