Substation Engineering Company (SECo) is a full-service Engineering and Design firm specializing in utility high voltage transmission and substation projects. The Principal Engineer – Protection & Control (P&C) and Relay Settings serves as a senior technical authority responsible for the engineering, application, coordination, and verification of protection and control systems for high-voltage substations.
Responsibilities:
- Lead protection & control design, relay application, and relay settings for transmission and distribution substations
- Serve as client facing technical point of contact on behalf of the company
- Define and approve protection philosophies and schemes for new and retrofit projects
- Provide man-hour and deliverable estimates for a wide variety of protection and control related projects
- Establish and enforce protection & control standards, methodologies, and best practices
- Perform or oversee the development of protection and control related construction drawings such as: One Line Diagrams, Three Line Diagrams, Schematic Diagrams, Wiring Diagrams, Bills of Material
- Perform or oversee development of documentation related to: Relay Settings, Relay Logic Diagrams, Relay Coordination Studies
- Perform or oversee calculations such as: Protective Relay Setpoints – all types of power system elements, Arc Flash, Short Circuit, Voltage Drop, Cable Ampacities, AC and DC auxiliary system sizing
- Perform quality control checking for the various deliverables, studies and calculations previously listed in accordance with applicable company and client processes. Conduct short-circuit, protection coordination, and arc-flash studies
- Establish and enforce protection & control standards, methodologies, and best practices
- Provide technical oversight during commissioning, testing, and troubleshooting
- Mentor and supervise senior and mid-level engineers and review technical work products
- Prepare material specifications and provide procurement support
- Monitor budget and schedule for assigned tasks
- Work in a team environment, coordinate requirements with other engineering and design disciplines
- Provide technical directions to subordinate team members
Requirements:
- BSEE or MSEE
- Professional Engineer (PE) license required
- 15+ years of experience in protection & control engineering with strong relay settings expertise
- Deep knowledge of transmission and distribution protection schemes and modern microprocessor relays
- Experience with utility standards and IEEE/NERC/NESC/NEC requirements
- Proven ability to lead complex projects and make sound technical decisions
- Strong analytical, communication, and leadership skills
- Proficiency in English
- Ability to independently work through individual projects and/or take the lead role in broader projects
- Computer proficiency required in a variety of collaboration platforms and software such as SharePoint, Teams, and Bluebeam Revu
