Michigan Medicine is seeking a Senior Business Systems Analyst to support the Epic Clinical Documentation team. This role involves leading the planning, design, and implementation of clinical documentation systems while mentoring junior analysts and collaborating with clinical staff to optimize workflows.
Responsibilities:
- Serve as a subject matter expert for Epic Inpatient Clinical Documentation, leading the planning, design, build, testing, implementation, and ongoing optimization of clinical systems
- Configure and maintain Epic functionality to support clinical documentation workflows, regulatory requirements, and enterprise objectives
- Lead and participate in Epic upgrades, enhancements, and maintenance activities, ensuring system stability, performance, and alignment with organizational standards
- Partner closely with nursing, ancillary staff, physicians, and informatics leaders to translate clinical workflows and requirements into effective Epic solutions
- Mentor and provide guidance to junior Business Systems Analysts, promoting best practices in analysis, build quality, documentation, and stakeholder engagement
- Lead assigned projects and related work activities, facilitating meetings, defining scope, prioritizing tasks, developing project plans, and delivering outcomes within defined timelines
- Independently assess business needs, analyze options, evaluate risks, and recommend solutions that have significant operational and clinical impact
- Act as a trusted advisor to clinical and operational stakeholders, balancing competing priorities and resolving conflicts to achieve consensus and successful outcomes
- Develop and maintain detailed system documentation, including build specifications, Epic checklists, change records, workflow diagrams, and mapping updates
- Ensure documentation supports audit readiness, knowledge transfer, and long-term system sustainability
- Communicate effectively with clinicians, regulatory teams, operational leaders, and IT partners to provide status updates, gather feedback, and drive continuous refinement of system functionality
- Translate technical concepts into clear, actionable information for non-technical audiences
- Identify opportunities to optimize clinical documentation workflows, improve user experience, and reduce clinician burden through system enhancements and process redesign
- Proactively stay current on Epic releases, new functionality, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices related to clinical documentation and health information systems
- Support a culture of learning, collaboration, and continuous improvement within the Applications and Clinical Informatics teams
- Participate in on-call off hours and weekend rotation
- Support the planning, design, build, testing, and implementation of Epic Inpatient Clinical Documentation workflows and system components

- Participate in Epic upgrades, enhancement cycles, and maintenance activities, helping ensure system reliability, accuracy, and alignment with established standards
- Collaborate with nursing, ancillary staff, physicians, and informatics partners to gather requirements, validate workflows, and implement solutions that meet clinical needs
- Lead assigned project tasks and workstreams, including meeting facilitation, task prioritization, and timeline tracking to support successful project outcomes
- Analyze business needs and system issues, evaluate potential solutions, and provide recommendations that support clinical and operational goals
- Work effectively with clinical and operational stakeholders to gather feedback, clarify requirements, and help resolve issues that arise during project work
- Create and maintain accurate system documentation, including build records, change documentation, workflow diagrams, and Epic-required checklists
- Ensure documentation supports system maintenance, troubleshooting, audit requirements, and knowledge sharing within the team
- Communicate clearly with clinicians, regulatory staff, operational stakeholders, and IT team members to provide updates, clarify requirements, and support decision making
- Explain technical concepts in a straightforward way to help non-technical users understand system changes and impacts
- Identify and recommend opportunities to streamline clinical documentation workflows and improve the user experience
- Stay current with new Epic features, regulatory changes, and best practices relevant to clinical documentation and healthcare information systems
- Contribute to a collaborative team environment and participate in efforts to enhance processes, documentation standards, and system support practices
- Participate in on-call off hours and weekend rotation
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
- 5+ years of IT-related experience for Senior level
- 2-3 years of IT-related experience for Intermediate level
- Epic Certification or Proficiency in Clinical Documentation
- Bachelor's degree or better in a medical discipline or other IT related specialty
- Ability to work collaboratively with teams of all sizes
- Ability to multitask complex work assignments
