S&S Activewear is a leading North American distributor of imprintable apparel, focused on technology and innovation. The Staff Software Engineer will lead the design and delivery of advanced technical solutions, optimizing database systems critical to the company's operations and growth.
Responsibilities:
- Architect, design, and evolve SQL Server database schemas, indexing strategies, and storage structures for scale and resilience. Collaborate with software engineering teams to design efficient schema and data access patterns
- Lead complex performance investigations involving query execution plans, locking/latching behavior, and I/O bottlenecks
- Establish best practices for T SQL development, code reviews, and database development standards while serving as the organization’s database subject matter expert and technical mentor
- Build and refine monitoring and alerting for database health, performance anomalies, and long running queries using tools such as Datadog and SQL Sentry in order to quickly identify and triage issues with the application tier
- Lead efforts in capacity planning, high availability design, failover strategies, backup/restore validation, and disaster recovery readiness
- Partner with DevOps to improve CI/CD processes for database deployments, integration testing, and migration automation
- Provide oversight and support for data migration pipelines to data warehouse
- Evaluate and optimize database configurations including memory, CPU, parallelism, and storage throughput through direct involvement and oversight of 3rd party DBA resources
- Assess emerging database technologies, cloud capabilities, and performance tooling for potential adoption
Requirements:
- 10+ years of experience with SQL Server and T SQL, with mastery of query design, execution plans, and indexing strategies
- Deep understanding of database internals: locking, blocking, deadlocks, tempdb behavior, and concurrency models
- Hands on experience with performance monitoring tools (Datadog, Query Store, SQL Sentry, or similar)
- Proven experience leading large scale performance initiatives or major database modernization efforts
- Strong understanding of distributed systems, high availability, and fault tolerant architectures
- Ability to drive architectural decisions, mentor others, and influence cross functional teams
- Experience collaborating with software engineering teams to implement best practices and data models
- Proven track record of mentoring engineers and DBAs in database best practices
- Strong knowledge of how to build and maintain distributed applications
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices
- Experience with additional AWS services such as S3 and EC2
- Experience with Microsoft application ecosystems
- Experience with automation frameworks for database deployments (Flyway, SSDT, Liquibase)
