Summary:
The Packaging Automation Shop Technician Apprentice (Shop Technician) is a hands-on technical role responsible for the assembly maintenance, repair, testing, and preparation of automated packaging machinery and related equipment within the shop environment. This position supports field service operations by ensuring automation systems are properly built, configured, inspected, and ready for installation at customer facilities. The Shop Technician reports directly to the Shop Foreman and works closely with Field Technicians and Operations to maintain equipment quality, reliability, and deployment readiness. This role requires strong mechanical and technical aptitude and foundational knowledge of electrical systems, pneumatics, hydraulics, motor controls, and PLC-based equipment, along with the ability to work with industrial automation machinery while following company standards and procedures.
Key Position Responsibilities:
- Assemble, install, and configure automated packaging machinery, subassemblies, and components according to engineering drawings and specifications
- Troubleshoot and resolve mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, PLC, motor, and control-related issues within the shop environment
- Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, and functional testing on packaging automation systems prior to deployment
- Support equipment rebuilds, refurbishments, retrofits, and upgrade projects
- Prepare machines for shipment and field installation, ensuring completeness, quality, and operational readiness
- Assist with the reception and staging of equipment
- Assist with the reception of spare parts from OEM’s and the shipment of spare parts for Field Technicians
- Maintain shop organization, cleanliness, and inventory of tools, parts, documentation, and consumables
- Document work performed, parts usage, and testing results accurately
- Coordinate and facilitate shop workflow to support project timeliness and operational priorities
- Follow all company safety policies, procedures, and Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) requirements
- Identify opportunities for equipment improvements, reliability enhancements, and cost savings
- Assist with and play a primary role in managing the Spare Parts Room, including organization, inventory control, receiving, and issuing parts to Field Technicians
- Act as a user for our Computer Maintenance Management System (CMMS) software
- Support occasional field service activities as needed
Position Qualifications and Demands:
- Experience in packaging automation, industrial maintenance, military maintenance, or graduation from a technical college with a degree in Mechatronics or Industrial Maintenance
- Strong mechanical, technical, and electrical aptitude
- Familiarity with PLC-controlled machinery and industrial sensors at a troubleshooting level
- Extreme attention to detail with the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced shop environment
- Proven reliability to show up to work on time and follow directives and processes
- Professional organizational and communication skills with a customer-first mindset
- The ideal candidate will live in Central Florida
- Ability to stand, bend, kneel, and work with tools for extended periods
- Ability to work in an industrial shop environment with exposure to noise, dust, and moving equipment
- Able to lift and carry tools or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds
- Positive, can-do attitude with a strong work ethic and problem-solving ability
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work safely, responsibly, and professionally in customer facilities
