Position Summary
The Tooling Engineer III will support the Molding and Tooling Repair Departments and report to the Tooling Manager. The Tooling Engineer III is responsible for the repair and improvement initiatives of tooling used in injection molding of both thermoplastic and silicone. This role will support improvements in the department through adherence to good engineering and documentation practices. The key responsibility of this position is to exercise judgement while satisfy the below responsibilities and manage performance improvement projects.
This position is 100% onsite at our Salt Lake City, UT manufacturing facility.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Day to day
- Follow all safety procedures and promote safety within the department.
- Under the guidance of the Tooling Manager, work to deliver tooling solutions that meet expectations, e.g. yield, cycle-time, quality requirements, maintenance’s needs.
- Follow all safety procedures and promote safety within the department.
- Manage any changes to tooling (repairs, design changes etc.) are properly documented and approved by adhering to change control procedures.
- Ensure spare parts are available and drawings are updated to any changes.
- Support molding production to ensure day-to-day goals are met.
- Support Project timelines and milestones and bring them to completion on time and within budget.
- Assist in completion of CAPA tasks and deliverables (Corrective and Preventive).
- Longer term expectations
- Initiate and manage projects with adherence to program management guidelines.
- Be able to independently lead a team navigating through hurdles, achieve performance, consider input from multiple functional areas & address the problem through a holistic method.
- Proficiency with the use of Design for Manufacturing, SPC, DOE and Six Sigma techniques.
- Procedure development for tooling areas.
Knowledge, Skills & Qualifications
- Able to read, understand and create 2D drawings of integrate steel and plastic components.
- Understanding of thermal transfer relationship between steel and plastic used in injection molding.
- Good knowledge of mold design for high volume manufacturing.
- Knowledge of cold and hot runner molding and high cavitation tools.
- Knowledge of mold manufacturing processes and their capabilities.
- Knowledge of Liquid Silicone Rubber Molding processes and tooling
- Proficient in Solidworks or similar.
- Strong skills in project scheduling.
- Demonstrate problem analysis skills and provide solutions.
- Proficient in the use of statistics and Six Sigma methodology.
- Able to lead teams and manage capital projects
- Able to work with technicians to improve processes i.e. Poke-Yoke and SMED initiatives
- Identify Root Cause and Implement Corrective Actions
- Review and understand tool and product drawings, tolerance stack up, understanding molding processing documents, data collection and analysis, and development of standard work instructions.
- Proficient in MS word applications. Excellent written and verbal communication is required.
Education and Experience
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
- 4-7 years’ experience
- Machining or hands on experience is highly desired.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
- Work is performed in a clean room and or a shop floor environment.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to sit or stand for long periods of time; depending on the work they are performing.
- Engineer is required to use computer or touch screen to enter work order data
- Must be able to occasionally move and lift objects of up to 50 lbs
- Typically requires travel less than 5% of the time
