POSITION SUMMARY
Fraction Freeze-Dried is a startup manufacturer of premium freeze-dried pet food products. We are seeking a Production Systems Technician to own the technical backbone of our manufacturing operation. In this role, you will integrate, program, operate, and maintain our freeze-drying equipment and supporting systems, including PLC-based controls, electrical systems, and process instrumentation. You will build the data infrastructure that drives recipe development and production optimization.
Beyond the core systems work, you will support day-to-day production operations and assist the Production Manager with facility upkeep. This is a startup environment where versatility matters. Freeze-drying cycles run on their own timeline, so the role requires scheduling flexibility, including the ability to come in at varying hours to manage machine turnovers and production changeovers.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Systems Integration & Engineering (Primary)
- Set up, install, commission, and service freeze-drying machinery and supporting production equipment from initial delivery through ongoing operation
- Integrate, configure, and maintain control systems including PLCs, HMIs, sensors, and electrical components
- Program, troubleshoot, and optimize PLC-based control logic for freeze-drying cycles and supporting automation
- Perform routine and corrective service on machinery to maintain peak performance and minimize unplanned downtime
- Design and implement instrumentation and data acquisition systems to capture cycle parameters such as temperature, pressure, vacuum levels, and timing
- Build and maintain production data tracking systems that feed recipe development and process optimization
- Develop, refine, and document freeze-drying recipes based on cycle data, product characteristics, and quality outcomes
- Own the electrical systems for production equipment, including wiring, panel work, motor controls, and power distribution as needed
- Evaluate and recommend equipment upgrades, automation opportunities, and process improvements
- Create and maintain technical documentation including wiring diagrams, control logic, SOPs, and system specifications
Production & Freeze-Dryer Operations
- Operate and turn over freeze dryers to maintain around-the-clock operation and maximize machine utilization
- Hands-on execution of production and packaging work to meet production targets, including loading, unloading, labeling, and packing finished product
- Coordinate with the Production Manager to plan and prioritize production schedules and ensure timely completion
- Manage raw material and finished goods inventory, including receiving, tracking, and cycle counts
- Maintain accurate production records, batch logs, and inventory documentation
Food Safety & Quality Assurance
- Execute all food safety protocols in accordance with the facility HACCP plan
- Perform required sampling, testing, and environmental monitoring per company protocols
- Complete sanitation duties and verify cleaning procedures meet food safety standards
- Maintain food safety records, sanitation logs, and compliance documentation
Facility & Equipment Maintenance
- Support the Facility Maintenance Manager with routine and preventive maintenance of equipment and facility systems
- Perform facility maintenance including plumbing, electrical, and mechanical tasks as needed
- Monitor equipment performance and report issues promptly to minimize downtime
General
- Work flexible and variable hours, including early mornings, evenings, or weekends as production cycles require
- Communicate effectively with team members and management
- Perform additional duties as assigned to support the growth of the business

WORK ENVIRONMENT
This position is based in a food manufacturing facility. The environment includes exposure to varying temperatures (cold and ambient), wet conditions, and moderate noise levels. Personal protective equipment will be provided as required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Frequently required to stand, walk, bend, stoop, and reach throughout the shift
- Must be able to regularly lift and carry up to 50 lbs
- Ability to operate forklifts and pallet jacks
- Manual dexterity required for equipment operation, wiring, and instrumentation work
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Hands-on experience with electrical systems, motor controls, panel wiring, and instrumentation
- Experience implementing or integrating machinery in a manufacturing or processing environment
- Comfortable using data tracking tools, spreadsheets, and production software to log and analyze information
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook)
- Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing
- Reliable transportation and exemplary attendance record
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Degree in electrical engineering, industrial engineering, mechatronics, or a related technical field; or equivalent hands-on experience
- Experience with freeze-drying equipment or similar batch-process food manufacturing technology
- Knowledge of food safety principles and HACCP plans
- Experience with SCADA systems, HMI design, or industrial data acquisition platforms
- Working knowledge of plumbing and mechanical maintenance
- Forklift certification or equivalent experience
- HACCP, SQF, or other food safety certification
- Experience in a startup or small-company environment where wearing multiple hats is the norm
- Demonstrated experience with PLC programming, troubleshooting, and industrial control systems
