Battelle is a research and development company that manages the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) program. They are seeking a NEON IT Infrastructure Administrator – Data Engineer to oversee the design, implementation, and optimization of data collection and storage systems, ensuring efficient access to data across the organization.
Responsibilities:
- Provides expert data analysis and modeling, and physical/logical design
- Performs complex data warehouse design
- Leads database development functions such as query optimization and schema design
- Leads database administration functions including backups, restores, maintenance, and security configuration
- Leads projects by actively engaging in initiating, planning, executing, monitoring, and closing projects
- Trains other IT staff members in best practices
- Contributes to the development of procedures and standards for database development
- Identifies ways to improve data reliability, efficiency, and quality
- Prepares data for predictive and prescriptive modeling
- Assists with database integration into other applications and infrastructure components
- Performs needs assessment and evaluates new technology to improve and maintain core and enterprise infrastructure
- Engages external vendors when needed to solve complex problems or bugs
- Provides occasional after-hours support
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field with 8 years of experience as a Data Engineer/Data Analyst/Database Administrator or equivalent combination of education and/or experience
- Experience with database environments including PostgreSQL
- Experience with Trino query engine
- Experience with Apache Hive data warehouse software
- Experience with programming languages (Python, Java)
- Experience with Git and CI/CD practices
- Ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex issues with databases and software
- Ability to effectively document all technical designs and solutions
- Experience with automation
- Must be a U.S. Citizen
- Experience working in Google Cloud environment including CloudSQL and GKE
- Experience working with MySQL, Microsoft SQL, and Oracle databases
- Experience working in a scientific environment
