Job Purpose
To provide executive leadership and strategic oversight of the MEP department, guiding complex engineering projects and leading the MEP team to ensure operational excellence, technical integrity, and alignment with company objectives. The Engineering Director is responsible for driving performance, developing talent, strengthening cross-functional collaboration, and ensuring the successful delivery of MEP services across all business units.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Lead, manage, and grow the MEP department (8–12 staff), including hiring, mentoring, performance management, and succession planning.
- Develop engineers and designers toward licensure and increased technical responsibility.
- Establish clear performance expectations and accountability standards aligned with company goals.
- Conduct workforce and capacity planning to ensure proper staffing levels and balanced utilization.
- Foster a culture of technical excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Serve as the firmwide technical authority for all MEP engineering matters.
- Provide executive-level oversight on complex or high-risk projects across CR&D, QAS, and FINES.
- Sign and seal MEP drawings, reports, and engineering documents in accordance with Florida licensure requirements.
- Perform risk mitigation reviews and ensure compliance with the Florida Building Code and applicable standards.
- Oversee multidisciplinary coordination to ensure proper MEP integration across projects.
- Guide forensic investigations, 40/50-year recertifications, commissioning (CxA), and specialty technical services.
- Own and manage the MEP department P&L.
- Monitor and report key department metrics including utilization, realization, backlog, margin, and revenue forecasting.
- Ensure projects are delivered on schedule and within budget while meeting profitability targets.
- Support proposal development, fee structuring, and business development strategy.
- Collaborate with the Director of Operations on long-term strategic planning and service line growth.
- Develop and implement standardized MEP templates, technical standards, and QA/QC programs.
- Review and approve technical reports and engineering deliverables for quality and completeness.
- Ensure consistent documentation practices and risk management procedures across offices.
- Strengthen internal processes to improve efficiency, reduce liability exposure, and maintain regulatory compliance.
Requirements
Professional Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering from an accredited college or university (Master’s degree preferred).
- Active Florida Professional Engineer (P.E.) license via examination or active registration in another state with the ability to reciprocate to Florida within six months of beginning employment.
- Valid contractor license (building, mechanical, electrical, plumbing) preferred.
- Valid State of Florida Driver's License and reliable transportation required.
Minimum Experience
- 10+ years of progressively responsible experience in MEP engineering design and construction administration.
- Demonstrated experience leading complex, multidisciplinary engineering projects from concept through construction and closeout.
- Proven experience managing and developing engineering teams, including hiring, mentoring, performance evaluations, and succession planning.
- Experience overseeing department-level operations, including budgeting, forecasting, utilization management, and margin accountability.
- Established track record of sealing drawings and technical reports and assuming professional engineering responsibility.
- Experience performing risk mitigation reviews and resolving high-level technical challenges.
- Demonstrated involvement in forensic investigations, commissioning, and/or 40/50-year recertification projects preferred.
- Experience coordinating with architects, structural engineers, contractors, owners, and regulatory authorities.
- Proven ability to support business development efforts, proposals, and client relationship management.
Physical Demands*
Necessary to perform the assigned duties safely and effectively:
- Ability to sit with back at a 90-degree angle for up to 8 hours per day.
- Ability to look at a computer for up to 8 hours per day.
- Ability to stand upright for up to 8 hours per day.
- Must be able to access and navigate job sites and construction areas (uneven terrain, exposure to outdoor weather elements)
- Bending, stooping, squatting, kneeling, laying, crawling, and twisting required up to 30% of the time in this role.
- Must be able to ride in a hoist and/or swing stage.
- Must be able to lift, push, pull, and carry up to 50 pounds at times.
- Must be able to use right and left foot for repetitive movements as in operating controls or levers.
- Full dexterity of wrists and fingers required with repetitive motions.
- Must be able to see near, in the distance, color, depth, and range.
*Safety equipment, including but not limited to hard hat, OSHA approved footwear, safety glasses and safety vests, is always required while performing job functions on active construction sites. Safety gloves, ear plugs, and safety harness will be issued when appropriate.
