Position Overview
The Environmental Specialist is a skilled position requiring a detail-oriented, organized, safety-minded individual to work in conjunction with the operations team to ensure the compliance of activities at facilities.
Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)
- Conduct compliance reviews, inspections, and internal audits to ensure adherence with all applicable environmental permits, rules, and regulations.
- Obtain all environmental permits required for company plants, sites, and projects.
- Ensure all compliance or monitoring tests are conducted in accordance with timeframes outlined in environmental operation permits. File all compliance reports and documentation as required by regulatory agencies.
- Maintain documentation of compliance activities such as inspections, audits, complaints, and investigations.
- Inform internal field employees, managers, and outside contractors of company environmental policy, best practices, and compliance requirements.
- Provide educational events and training to all company employees on environmental issues and responsibilities.
- Report all violations of environmental permits, rules, and regulations to company management personnel and, when required by operational permits, to duly authorized regulatory agencies.
- Inform employees of corporate compliance hotlines and ensure they understand how to utilize them.
- Stay educated on changes to environmental legislation, trends, and best practices and assess the potential impact these changes will have on company operations.
- Advise frontline managers on use of any environmental compliance or reporting tools which are available for them.
- Develop and implement environmental compliance plans for programs such as air quality, storm water discharges, oil spill prevention or control, recycling, managing hazardous materials, employee education, and so on.
- Other duties as may be assigned.

Education/Experience
- High School diploma or general education degree (GED) required.
- Bachelor’s degree in an Environmental Discipline or comparable degree preferred or other related discipline and/or equivalent combination of knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- 2 years of experience in the environmental field or similar position and/or equivalent combination of knowledge, skills and abilities
Work Requirements
- Must be 18 years in age or older.
- Must pass drug screen and criminal background check.
- Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license.
- Regular and consistent attendance is required and must be willing to work evenings and weekends when necessary.
- Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
- Willingness to work independently or within a team environment and assist with other duties as required.
- Individuals are required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) in designated operations and production areas as stated by OSHA and/or MSHA. Protective equipment that may be required, but not limited to, for this position is: Safety Glasses, Safety (hard toe) Shoes, and Safety Vests.
- Compliance with all OSHA and/or MSHA regulations.
Knowledge/Skill Requirements
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software (Word, Excel Outlook). Willingness and ability to learn additional computer software and computer programs.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Analytical ability and process improvement knowledge.
- Ability to read and interpret technical documents and regulations.
- Ability to develop and foster relationships and trust at all levels of the organization.
- Demonstrate a hands-on, collaborative approach; work well in a team.
- Ability to summarize data from different sources into a concise format that can be easily expanded and communicated to support initiatives.
- Strong math and science skills to understand and calculate various items such as mass, volume, flow, etc.

- Able to use hands and fingers to manipulate objects, talk and hear.
- Vision abilities (with correction) include close, distance, peripheral, depth, and the ability to adjust focus.
- The employee is frequently required to stand, walk and sit.
- The employee is occasionally required to climb, crawl, kneel, and bend.
- Able to regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 15 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.
Work Environment
While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles and outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. A variety of noise levels, adverse weather conditions, and complex job sites are to be expected daily. Proper clothing, PPE (personal protective equipment) is required, and safety precautions should be taken to ensure your safety, and the safety of others in all conditions. While performing non-field duties of this position, the environment is typical of an office setting and the noise level is usually quiet to moderate.
