Role description:

Arcadis is seeking a highly experienced Principal Environmental Toxicologist to be based out of Vancouver. This full-time position within our Environmental Restoration group will support our contaminated sites assessment and remediation teams.

The Principal Environmental Toxicologist will develop and lead environmental site assessment and contaminated sites remediation programs (including screening level and detailed risk assessment) and provide technical oversight to our project execution teams. You will have a strong understanding of BC and national site assessment and remediation standards and regulatory advocacy.  You have expert level of experience in leading detailed human health and ecological risk assessments.

You will have the ability to successfully coordinate and collaborate with all parts of the organization, including Client Account Leaders, Market Sector Leaders, and Service Line Leaders in other geographies and business units, and will always have a direct line of communication to Area Leaders. Role accountabilities:

As a Principal Toxicologist, you will be responsible for the development and completion of environmental site assessment, contaminated sites remediation and risk assessment programs for complex contaminated sites for our clients including private sector, government (federal, provincial, local) and First Nations. You will utilize your expert level experience in applied toxicology to assess contaminants in soil, sediment, groundwater, surface water, vapour and country foods.  You have extensive experience in data compilation, statistical analysis, contaminant of concern identification, development of conceptual site models, problem formulations, exposure modelling and risk characterization.

This role is also responsible for client and regulatory correspondence and interactions, leading teams to evaluate data in order to develop conceptual site models for environmental site investigations. The position involves delineating the nature and extent of contamination, evaluating and implementing remedial alternatives, and modifying or optimizing remediation and monitoring programs as needed. 

Strong writing skills are essential, as the role requires technical report reviewing and writing. Additionally, the position includes training, coaching, and mentoring staff on consulting best practices, while motivating team members to achieve business growth goals. Staying up to date with developments within the industry sector, as well as technical and legislative changes, is important; the role also seeks opportunities to develop a strong professional profile through activities such as conference presentations, publications, and participation on technical committees. 

The position leads the preparation of specialist elements of bids and working with multidisciplinary teams to support the production of high-quality, winning proposals. 

Qualifications & Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, environmental science, engineering, toxicology or closely related field; advanced degree (MASc, MEng) in relevant areas preferred.
• 12 or more years' relevant science experience, including leadership of the development and implementation of specialist solutions.
• Professional accreditation (e.g., P.Chem., P.Eng, RPBio) status or equivalent,
• Detailed knowledge of relevant national standards and codes of practice, including applicable provincial and federal regulations.
• Extensive technical experience in preparing human heath and ecological risk assessments (federal and provincial based)
• Significant environmental consulting experience on large scale highly complex projects
• Experience managing business relationships at executive level.
• Demonstrable project experience working in partnership with Indigenous Peoples and Communities.

Key skills for the role also include:

• Demonstrated ability to supervise and mentor junior and intermediate colleagues, fostering their professional growth and development
• Excellent technical writing skills; able to produce complex reports
• Excellent research, data gathering and analysis skills; strong attention to detail and accuracy
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

The salary range for this position is $95,900-$137,000. The base salary represents Arcadis’ hiring range for this position. Actual salaries will vary and will be based on various factors, such as location, skills, experience, and qualification for the role.
