Description
The Linux System Administrator is responsible for the secure, reliable operation and continuous improvement of the organization’s Linux infrastructure. This role administers Linux servers and workstations that support engineering, research, and production workloads, including core services such as identity/integration, storage, virtualization, monitoring, and automation. The position ensures system availability, security compliance, and performance in support of SHINE’s operational and regulatory requirements.
The base salary range for this position is $90,000 - $110,000 per year plus a comprehensive compensation package. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location.
Duties and Responsibilities
Specific duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Administer, configure, secure, and maintain Linux servers, workstations, and related infrastructure.
- Lead the deployment, modernization, and lifecycle management of Linux compute clusters, including replacement of aging or underperforming systems.
- Ensure Linux systems supporting SaM, Engineering, Chrysalis, and Phase III environments are compliant, stable, and properly maintained.
- Apply system hardening, patching, and configuration standards in alignment with organizational cybersecurity and compliance requirements.
- Monitor system performance, availability, and capacity; proactively identify and resolve issues to minimize downtime.
- Troubleshoot complex Linux operating system, storage, networking, and application issues.
- Implement and maintain automation, scripting, and configuration management to improve efficiency and consistency.
- Develop and maintain documentation, standards, and operational procedures for Linux system administration.
- Collaborate with IT, engineering, cybersecurity, and other stakeholders to support Linux-based workflows and projects.
- Participate in incident response, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement initiatives related to Linux infrastructure.
Requirements
Education and Experience
- Associate’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
- Demonstrated experience administering Linux systems in enterprise or regulated environments.
Technical Skills
- Strong experience with Linux operating systems (e.g., Red Hat, Debian, Mint, Ubuntu, or similar).
- Experience with system security hardening, patch management, and vulnerability remediation.
- Experience supporting compute clusters, high-performance computing (HPC), or parallel processing environments.
- Proficiency with scripting and automation tools (e.g., Bash, Python, Ansible).
- Working knowledge of networking, storage, virtualization, and system monitoring in Linux environments.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience administering Microsoft Windows Server environments and core Microsoft services (e.g., Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS/DHCP), including Azure and Intune.
- Experience implementing and supporting enterprise monitoring and centralized logging solutions (e.g., Prometheus/Grafana, Splunk), including alert tuning and troubleshooting.
Other Requirements
- Participation in an on-call rotation and occasional after-hours work, as needed.
- Ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues independently and collaboratively.
- Strong documentation, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work effectively with cross-functional technical and non-technical teams.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
- Requires frequent leaning, bending, stooping, crouching, grasping, and reaching above the shoulders and below the knees.
- Moderate physical activity. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 40 pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.
- Fine motor coordination and strong depth perception are beneficial.
- Work involves moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
- Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
