The primary role is to provide customer support through quoting, sourcing, and delivering product/parts quotations. In addition to supporting engineering and commercial tasks, this role will play an active role in supporting activities to expedite the development of processes and procedures of the APM business unit.
Application Engineer Essential Functions/Success Factors:
- Prioritizes and manages daily workflow, along with communicating, supporting and collaborating with Customer Service Specialists, Account Managers, Business Development Managers and Supervisors to ensure internal and external requests and deadlines are met. Employs a “QUOTE TO WIN” strategy around all opportunities and escalates issues appropriately and in a timely manner.
- Demonstrates technical competency of APM Hardware and Software products and is skilled at developing BOMs that reflect customer desired solutions. Will aid in proposal development and estimating activities.
- Consistently exhibits exceptional customer service that results in lasting business partnerships. Takes responsibility for overall customer satisfaction, including the direct involvement and coordination of expediting deliveries. Provides consistent service levels and product expertise, while proactively engaging in customer interaction over the phone, including with quotation follow up. Establishes “Trusted Advisor” relationships with customers.
- Coordinates the delivery of products by collaborating closely with vendors, customer service specialists, quotation specialists, project managers, customers, panel assembly shop, and warehouse personnel. May also assume the role of Project Manager for designated projects, overseeing all phases from initiation to successful completion.
- Manages Gross Profit Margins in line with the overall company goals using a Solution Selling approach. Actively listens and looks for solutions opportunities in our other business groups within Applied Control on a regular basis. Contributes to sales and technical training of Application Engineers and Quotation Specialists. Serves as a Subject Matter expert.
Application Engineer Responsibilities:
- Source and price designated products/parts for customers
- Field customer calls to answer questions and provide parts/product quotes
- Send finalized quotes to customers
- Provide excellent customer service
- Review and validate customer orders using the ERP and Emerson systems to ensure all required data is complete and accurate before submitting to customer service team for processing
- Establish “Trusted Advisor” customer relationships and visit customer sites periodically alongside Outside Sales, including Customer Site scope of work walk-downs when required
- Coordinate with Quotation and Customer service specialists on order processing, delivery, and customer follow up
- Coordinate with Project Managers, Customers, panel assembly shop and external engineering firms during project execution
- Exercise appropriate techniques to determine opportunities for application reviews by the Application Engineering group – cross-selling additional products and services
- Future State: Provide accurate solutions for Panel design, UL compliance, heat load calculations and Hazardous Location Requirements for customer facilities.
- Provide accurate solutions architecture and network integration
- Provide accurate solutions for AMS Hardware, Software, and Licensing
- Perform Quality Control and/or IAT (Internal Acceptance Testing) when required, to prepare panels for shipment or customer facing FAT.
- Perform Customer Facing FAT when required, including completion of open points, redline drawings and submittal of customer signed documentation.
- Mentorship - provide needed sales, technical in both Applied Control & Emerson specific training to other Application Engineers
Application Engineer Skills/Qualifications:
- Minimum 5 years relevant experience as an Application Engineer
- Subject Matter Expert in one or more of the following:
- Network Servers, Networking, Wireless Infrastructure
- AMS Hardware, Software, Licensing, Upgrades
- Applied Control Internal Systems
- Working knowledge of Emerson process automation products and reliability suite
- Knowledge of Solution Selling techniques
- Advanced skill level in Microsoft Excel and other MS Suite tools required
- Strong desire and proven ability to provide excellent customer service
- Effective prioritization and time management skills
- Self-motivated, requiring little supervision
- Discrete with confidential information
- Desire to help others and work with them to find solutions, demonstrating leadership qualities
- Proven ability to work closely with others, particularly peers and sales staff
Application Engineer Working Conditions:
Work is primarily in an office with the possibility for overnight travel a few times per year to visit customer sites or attend training.
Application Engineer Compensation:
Base Wage Range: $85,000 - $125,000 Prior work or industry experience as well as job-related education and unique skills will be taken into consideration when setting the wage rate.
Other Variable Compensation: Eligible for an annual profit share award based on company performance.
