Position Summary
This position will report directly to the Director of Operational Excellence. The Operational Excellence Specialist is responsible for driving continuous improvement, operational efficiency, and technical standardization across corrugated manufacturing lines. This individual will serve as the subject matter expert (SME) for corrugator technologies, overseeing the integration of new capital equipment, facilitating comprehensive workforce training, and executing data-driven waste reduction initiatives to optimize profitability.
Core Responsibilities
- Capital Projects & Machine Commissioning: Lead the technical lifecycle of new corrugator installations, from initial specification and "trading" (evaluation/procurement) to installation and final commissioning. Ensure all new assets meet performance guarantees regarding speed, bonding quality, and energy consumption.
- Waste Management & Sustainability: Develop and implement a robust framework for tracking and reducing controllable waste. Analyze data to address root causes in starch consumption, paper trim, bonding failures, etc., ensuring alignment with corporate sustainability targets.
- Technical Training & Capability Building: Establish standardized operating procedures (SOPs). Design and execute technical training modules for machine crews to ensure high-level competency in wet-end chemistry, dry-end precision, and preventative maintenance.
- Process Engineering: Audit existing corrugator configurations to optimize heat transfer, steam pressure, and adhesive application. Utilize Lean Six Sigma methodologies to minimize downtime and maximize Square Footage per Hour (SFPH).
- Quality Assurance: Collaborate with the Quality department to eliminate board defects (e.g., warp, washboarding, or delamination) through precise mechanical calibration, heat, and moisture control.
Qualifications
- Minimum 10 years of progressive experience within the corrugated industry, specifically in high-volume manufacturing environments. Must have management experience in the industry.
- Advanced knowledge of corrugator components, starch adhesive formulations, and steam system thermodynamics.
- Demonstrated ability to utilize ERP/MES data to identify operational bottlenecks and financial variances.
- Documented success in leading multi-million-dollar capital equipment start-ups and facility-wide change management.
- Lean Six Sigma Green or Black Belt certification is highly preferred.
