
Job Summary:
Builds and sets machining tools in support of operations. Distributes, receives, and stores tools, fixtures and other equipment used by operations. Monitors and maintains crib inventory. Required to manufacture a variety of cutting tools using CNC machines, cutter grinder and/or conventional grinding machines, while under supervision. May be required to work under the guidance of higher-grade Tool Makers and assist lower-grade Tool Makers.
Job Responsibilities:
• Working from shop routers, tool orders, oral and written instructions to plan and perform duties necessary to mount and set various tools, fixtures, tapes, and other equipment used on different machines to support operations.
• Mounts and sets tools in fixtures, holders and/or chuck. Maintains correct diameters, length, and type of cutting tool.
• Use tool setting machines and equipment such as: tool pre-setter, heat shrink and balancer.
• Routes complete sets of tools, fixtures and/or tapes to appropriate machines.
• Works corrective action on problems related to tool buildups or tool making.
• Works from oral and/or written instructions, blueprints, and specifications to build, alter and rework a variety of cutting tools using CNC tool and cutter grinder and/or conventional grinding machines under supervision.
• Determines correct angles, radius, and contour to form cutting tools.
• Sets up templates and operates a wide variety of cutter grinding equipment including CNC tool and cutter grinder with minimal assistance.
• Silver solders and repairs staggered tooth cutters.
• Uses simple hand tools and precision measuring instruments such as micrometers and calipers.
• Visually checks work to assure conformity to standard shop practice and monitor first part machine runs for proving toolset sequence and numerical control tape.
• Maintains inventory records and submits tool order lists to replenish supplies. Keeps tools in serviceable condition by sorting and routing them to tool grinding area for repair and/or sharpening. Recommends and requests tool modifications. Stores tapes as required and maintains electronic database as required.
• Consults with numerical control programmers when pre-punched tape or machine sequencing malfunction and recommends to supervision any new, additional or replacement equipment needed.
• Well versed in cutting tool prints.
• Responsible only for own work.
• Performs other related duties as required.
Education: Must have a high school diploma, an equivalent certificate, or a bronze level WorkKeys certification.
Experience: Requires a minimum of one year cutting tool sharpening and cutting tool manufacturing experience. Must successfully complete the Tool Maker B checklist within ninety (90) days after entering the classification.
Working Conditions: Typical machine shop working conditions.
