Woodlawn Consulting Group is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to design and develop mechanical layouts and assemblies for MV switchgear systems. The role involves creating detailed 3D models, collaborating with electrical engineers, and providing factory floor support to resolve design issues.
Responsibilities:
- Design and develop mechanical layouts and assemblies for MV switchgear, and related systems
- Create and revise detailed 3D models and 2D drawings using Autodesk or similar 3D CAD software and AutoCAD 2D
- Collaborate with electrical engineers to ensure mechanical and electrical integration of components
- Provide hands-on factory floor support to resolve design, fit, or assembly issues during production
- Participate in R&D projects, contributing to innovation and continuous improvement initiatives
- Ensure designs comply with applicable standards, customer specifications, and manufacturing capabilities
- Troubleshoot design and fabrication challenges with strong problem-solving and analytical skills
- Maintain accurate documentation and revision control for all design files and drawings
- Manage time effectively to meet project schedules and deadlines for customer approval drawings, BOM release, and production support
- Communicate effectively across departments, supporting smooth project execution and timely delivery
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field
- Minimum 5 years of experience with a MV switchgear manufacturer
- Proficiency in Autodesk Inventor, SolidWorks, or equivalent 3D design software
- Exposure to PDM systems and ERP-integrated design environments
- Strong knowledge of AutoCAD 2D drafting
- Solid understanding of MV switchgear construction
- Working knowledge of IEEE standards related to switchgear, including IEEE C37 series for metal-clad and metal-enclosed equipment
- Familiarity with MV UL standards and compliance requirements
- Understanding of metal-clad design principles, such as compartmentalization, bus isolation, grounding, safety interlocks, and arc-resistant considerations
- Experience with metal-enclosed switchgear layouts, including bus arrangements, breaker compartments, cable sections, and equipment integration
- Knowledge of high-voltage insulation clearances, dielectric spacing, and creepage distances for MV equipment up to 38kV
- Familiarity with busbar design, short-circuit bracing, and structural support for fault withstand requirements
- Excellent communication skills with a strong sense of ownership and accountability
