UL Solutions is a global leader in applied safety science, and they are seeking a Functional Safety Consultant with strong electronic hardware design and hardware safety development experience. The role involves creating safety work products for various vehicle and automation features, ensuring compliance with safety standards, and leading safety analyses and technical assessments.
Responsibilities:
- Lead the development and review of functional safety work products for vehicle programs, with emphasis on hardware safety lifecycle activities in compliance with ISO 26262, ISO 21448 (SOTIF), UL 4600, and related functional safety standards
- Develop strong safety argumentation and contribute to safety case creation, including evidence‑based justification of hardware and system‑level safety concepts
- Create or support hazard and risk analyses and develop functional, technical, hardware, and software safety concepts for a wide range of vehicle systems, subsystems, and electronic components
- Define and decompose hardware safety requirements based on customer system, hardware, and software architectures; ensure alignment with safety mechanisms, diagnostic concepts, and architectural metrics
- Lead and perform detailed safety analyses, including FMEA, FMEDA, DFA, FTA, STPA, and other analyses covering electronic hardware, power electronics, battery systems, autonomous driving components, and applications ranging from L2 to L4 automated systems
- Perform verification reviews, confirmation measures, and technical assessments, ensuring compliance with functional safety, hardware development processes, diagnostic coverage, and architectural integrity
- Lead technical workshops, safety training sessions, and gap analyses, focusing on hardware safety development, requirements definition, FMEDA, DFA, and functional safety best practices
- Lead client programs by interacting regularly with clients in technical program meetings and project reviews
- Provide technical assistance to clients in reference to functional safety and related technical fields
- Projects may include optional travel to client sites and to other UL locations
Requirements:
- The candidate must have hands-on electronics hardware design and circuit development experience, including component selection, schematic design, circuit analysis, and safety‑focused hardware development
- M.S. or B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Computer Science, related technical degree, or equivalent experience
- 5+ years of experience in safety related role in automotive functional safety
- have hands-on electronics hardware design and circuit development experience, including component selection, schematic design, circuit analysis, and safety‑focused hardware development
- Safety Analysis knowledge including FMEA, FMEDA, DFA
- Experience working with ISO 26262 and ISO 21448 standards
