Verily is a subsidiary of Alphabet that is using a data-driven approach to change the way people manage their health and the way healthcare is delivered. Launched from Google X in 2015, our purpose is to bring the promise of precision health to everyone, every day. We are focused on generating and activating data from a variety of sources, including clinical, social, behavioral and the real world, to arrive at the best solutions for a person based on a comprehensive view of the evidence. Our unique expertise and capabilities in technology, data science and healthcare enable the entire healthcare ecosystem to drive better health outcomes.
As a leader within the Sponsors, Payers, and Sites (SPS) engineering department, you will own the technical strategy and engineering lines for the systems that power Verily Pre. Your organization builds the foundational Control Plane—the internal and external configuration systems that allow Verily to scale by making the platform modular, multi-tenant, and rapidly deployable.
This is a high-leverage leadership role that sits at the intersection of technical architecture and business strategy. You will act as a "force multiplier," working closely with Product and Engineering leadership to harmonize our vision and ensure that the platform's configuration capabilities directly accelerate the delivery of precision health solutions.
Strategic Harmonization: Partner deeply with Product Management and Engineering Leadership to align the technical roadmap with Verily’s commercial goals. You will translate complex business needs into a cohesive configuration strategy, ensuring the platform scales elegantly for Sponsors, Payers, and Sites.
Orchestration & Extensibility: Drive the vision for a "configuration-first" architecture. You will oversee the engineering of systems that orchestrate environment provisioning and multi-tenant isolation, enabling rapid, automated onboarding of new partners without custom code.
Engineering Productivity & Velocity: Own the mission of driving organizational productivity. You will build the "paved paths" and configuration frameworks that reduce development friction, automate repetitive tasks, and allow the broader SPS organization to deploy high-quality features with industry-leading velocity.
Organizational Leadership (M3-M4): Lead a multi-team organization by managing a cadre of Engineering Managers and Staff Engineers. You are responsible for organizational design, headcount planning, and creating a culture of technical excellence and operational rigor.
People & Talent Development: Champion a culture of continuous growth. You will be responsible for building leadership pipelines, mentoring engineering managers, and establishing clear career development paths. You will foster an inclusive environment where high-performing engineers can do their best work.
Operational Excellence: Lead improvements to cross-functional business processes and effectively manage the trade-offs between short-term execution and medium-term architectural investments in the configuration plane.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.
12+ years of experience in software or platform engineering.
5+ years of experience managing engineering managers and leading technical strategy for large, multi-team organizations.
Proven track record of People Development, including experience hiring, mentoring, and scaling engineering management layers.
Demonstrated experience building and scaling Control Planes or configuration-driven platforms in a multi-tenant environment.
Ability to harmonize complex product requirements with engineering constraints to drive organizational velocity.
Preferred Qualifications
Leadership Depth: Experience leading organizations of 30-50+ individuals and a proven ability to develop high-potential talent into leadership roles.
Systemic Productivity: Experience defining and tracking metrics related to engineering productivity and developer experience (e.g., DORA metrics).
Ecosystem Knowledge: Experience in the Biopharma, Payer, or Clinical Site domain, with an understanding of how to build extensible platforms for highly regulated industries.
Executive Influence: Exceptional communication skills with a proven ability to influence VP-level stakeholders across Product, Science, and Engineering.
