The Director, Cloud Engineering is responsible for building and leading a high-performing cloud engineering organization that supports the myQ platform and other IoT products, ensuring the platform remains resilient, secure, and scalable as the business grows.
Responsibilities:
- Build, lead, and scale a world‑class cloud engineering organization supporting IoT services, including the myQ platform, by developing senior engineers, architects, and SRE leaders and fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement
- Define and execute the cloud platform strategy across architecture, scalability, reliability, security, and cost optimization to support millions of connected devices and evolving business needs
- Provide architectural and operational leadership for AWS‑based cloud services, ensuring platforms are secure, highly available, resilient, and cost‑effective
- Establish and drive engineering excellence practices, including design reviews, coding standards, testing strategies, CI/CD pipelines, release management, and automation to ensure consistent, high‑quality delivery
- Embed Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) principles across cloud teams, including monitoring, alerting, incident response, post‑incident reviews, capacity planning, and operational readiness
- Lead performance, load, and stress testing initiatives to validate platform behavior under real‑world conditions and ensure reliability during peak traffic and device usage
- Create and grow a Cloud and SRE Community of Practice, enabling knowledge sharing, skill development, and alignment on cloud‑native best practices across engineering teams
- Partner closely with product, application, and security teams to enable fast, reliable, and secure delivery of cloud‑based IoT products and services
- Define, track, and act on platform KPIs, including availability, latency, throughput, deployment velocity, cost efficiency, and customer experience metrics
- Continuously evolve cloud tooling, processes, and AWS services to improve observability, automation, scalability, and operational efficiency while aligning with enterprise architecture standards
- Ensure compliance with security, regulatory, and operational requirements, including ISO, SOC2, and other relevant frameworks, protecting customer data and business continuity
- Comply with health and safety guidelines and rules; managers should also ensure compliance across their teams
- Protect Chamberlain Group’s reputation by keeping information confidential
- Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reading professional publications, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional societies
- Contribute to the team effort by accomplishing related results and participating on projects as needed
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent practical experience
- An advanced degree may substitute for up to two (2) years of experience
- AWS certifications (Solutions Architect, DevOps Engineer, or equivalent) preferred
- 10+ years in cloud engineering, SRE, or platform leadership roles with AWS-focused architecture experience
- Proven track record of building and scaling world-class cloud engineering teams and fostering engineering excellence
- Experience with IoT cloud platforms and distributed systems
- Experience leading SRE, performance engineering, and reliability initiatives for production systems
- Experience with AWS services, CI/CD pipelines, automation, Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform, CloudFormation, Ansible), and monitoring/observability tools (CloudWatch, Datadog, Prometheus, Grafana)
- Experience creating communities of practice, technical standards, and knowledge-sharing frameworks
- Exceptional leadership, strategic thinking, and stakeholder management skills
- Deep understanding of AWS architecture, IoT operations, cloud security, and compliance
- Ability to influence across multiple teams and levels to drive engineering culture and technical excellence
- Strong communication, project planning, and organizational skills
- Master's degree in computer science, Engineering, or related field
- Certifications: Cloud (AWS/Azure/GCP), Performance Testing, Security Testing
- Experience in high-scale IoT deployments, real-time data processing, and edge device integration
- Familiarity with chaos engineering, capacity planning, and cloud cost optimization
- Hands-on knowledge of scripting languages, SQL, or cloud automation tooling
