Job Description:
UNFI is currently implementing SAP and is looking for an architect who can operate as either a Solution Architect or an Enterprise Architect depending on project needs. A retail background is strongly preferred. The focus is on hands-on solutioning rather than theoretical strategy.
- Gap
- They don t currently have a high level design doc (HLD) which is a common document part of delivery
- Looking for a solution architect that has a more enterprise view
- Have had architects in the past that have been narrow
- Missing an SA that would understand functional and nonfuctional requirements within a project, assigned to more complex project and help design
Key Gaps Being Addressed
- No standardized High-Level Design (HLD) documentation currently exists, which is creating delivery risk
- Previous architects were too narrow or siloed in focus
- Need architects with an enterprise-wide view rather than point-solution design
- Lack of consistent ownership of functional and non-functional requirements on complex initiatives
- Need architects who can be assigned to higher-complexity projects and drive end-to-end solution design
Enterprise Advantage - Project
- Recently onboarded a Project Manager; requirements gathering is in progress
- Homegrown retail solution built over ~20 years to support item hosting and retail operations
- Environment has extensive integrations and limited documentation
- Architect will analyze the current state environment and integrations
- Partner with BAs to review requirements and design a forward-looking solution
- Strong concern that non-functional requirements are not being captured (reliability, disaster recovery, security, etc.)
- Non-functional requirements must be embedded into the architectural design
- Architect will produce a high-level design document representing current and future state
- Present solution to the Architecture Review Board for approval
- Translate approved architecture to delivery teams and ensure alignment and understanding
Must-Have Technologies
Ideal Background and Skill Profile
- Strong understanding of cloud platforms and third-party integrations
- MuleSoft experience is highly valuable
- SAP experience required, with solid understanding of SAP landscapes (not deep configuration)
- Experience architecting solutions with Databricks, MuleSoft, and SAP
- New initiatives will be cloud-based (AWS); no future homegrown systems expected
- Ability to evaluate vendor products first, then design integrations and ecosystem architecture
- Strong understanding of vendor capabilities and marketplace offerings
- Focus is on ecosystem design, integration architecture, and non-functional requirements rather than hands-on coding
- Integration architecture is the most complex and critical area for this role
- Architect does not need to be deeply hands-on technically, but must understand how systems fit together
- This is not a pure strategist role; they need a problem-solver
- Not looking for someone who stays theoretical or high-level
- Need someone who can assess the landscape and propose practical, executable solutions
