Mount Sinai Health System is a leading healthcare organization committed to delivering outstanding patient care. The IT Technical Engineer II role focuses on optimizing and enhancing database infrastructure, primarily for SQL Server and Oracle, while ensuring high performance and availability.
Responsibilities:
- Utilizes an in-depth knowledge of technological alternatives and directions, business systems and requirements, conducts independent analyses and reviews of technical and business requirements
- Develops innovations with business partnerships, enhancing operations and/or providing a competitive advantage to the organization. Acts as the primary technical resource and consultant, in their area of expertise, to senior client and IT management and staff
- Provides feedback on programming, interface, or product design issues which could impact scheduling and allocation of resources
- Ensures technical designs comply with applicable architecture standards and designs are functionally and technically feasible
- Validates technology ability to meet business, performance, integration, and scalability requirements for each project
- Establish, communicate, and enforce application design patterns, interface standards, and development guidelines
- Promotes and strongly communicates the architectural blueprints to mobilize the rest of the organization to build solutions that fit customer needs
- Adjusts product architecture as customers’ requirements, market conditions and technology evolve
- Partner with program managers and development teams on oversight for all requirements to formulate appropriate architecture required to provide system functionality, deciding when to advocate and when to compromise to arrive at mutually acceptable solutions
- Understands the long-term business objectives and proposes technology strategies to meet those objectives by introducing innovation through technology
- Provide day-to-day operational support for enterprise database environments, including monitoring, performance tuning, incident response, and ensuring the reliability and availability of SQL Server and Oracle systems. Support backup, recovery, and disaster recovery processes in alignment with established standards
- Partner closely with IT operations and management teams to support database platforms, troubleshoot issues, and contribute to ongoing improvements in stability, performance, and capacity planning
- Administer and support database platforms and related components, including SQL Server and Oracle instances, high-availability configurations, replication technologies, storage integration, and backup/recovery tools across distributed environments
- Performs related duties as assigned or requested
Requirements:
- Bachelors degree in Computer Science or a related discipline preferred. An equivalent combination of education and/or experience may substitute
- 5+ years of experience in engineering and support of an institutional IT system, a segment of that system or a process, as assigned
- Must have technical experience in networking and relational database software products and demonstrate seasoned IT skills and competency in most aspects of software activities
- Must have excellent trouble-shooting, documentation and communication skills
- 5+ in database administration within large enterprise environments, including the design, implementation, and management of SQL Server and Oracle database platforms
- Deep expertise in database technologies, including performance tuning, indexing, query optimization, and understanding of upstream/downstream dependencies across application, storage, and infrastructure layers in both physical and virtual environments
- Proven experience developing database strategies, roadmaps, and architectures for large-scale organizations, enabling scalability, high availability, and growth with minimal manual intervention
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders at all levels, adapting messaging as needed and demonstrating active listening
- Experience with database migrations to cloud platforms, including Azure (e.g., Azure SQL, Managed Instance, or Oracle workloads in cloud environments)
- Proficiency in scripting and automation, using tools such as PowerShell, T-SQL, PL/SQL, or Python to streamline administrative tasks and improve efficiency
- Extensive experience with database high availability and disaster recovery solutions, including backup/recovery strategies, replication, clustering, Always On Availability Groups, Data Guard, and capacity planning
- Advanced understanding of database architecture concepts, including transaction management, concurrency control, data integrity, storage structures, and performance optimization techniques
- Experience working with enterprise database ecosystems, including SQL Server and Oracle on operating systems such as Linux and Windows, with familiarity in integrating with storage and infrastructure components
- Proven ability to present complex technical ideas in business-friendly language proven technical and troubleshooting skills with the ability to isolate root causes
- Adapt to new different or changing requirements, quickly grasp new concepts, adapt and reflect on lessons learned – comfortable with ambiguity, analyzes and evaluates, defines problem/challenge, identifies alternatives and makes timely decisions
