Definition
Under general supervision, performs technical, administrative, and supervisory work, planning, directing, and controlling activities associated with safe, efficient, and prompt student transport, while providing support to school leadership.
Duties and Responsibilities
Under the general direction of the Principal, this position will be the primary staff person
responsible for the following functions:
• Supervises all bus drivers, including the lead driver.
• Plans, directs, and controls activities associated with safety and efficiency, while promptly transporting students for the cohort schools.
• Schedules substitute bus drivers and combines routes without disrupting school arrival/departure times.
• Assists in coordinating morning and afternoon transportation of students based on available drivers.
• Assists drivers in learning routes.
• Reports and assists with all accidents, driving hazards, and other related incidents.
• Follows procedures in the Bus Driver Handbook.
• Follows procedures of the NC rules and regulations governing the safe operation of a school bus/ passenger vehicle.
• Performs bus inspections for cleanliness and safety.
• Ensures that pre-trip bus inspections occur daily.
• Assists in assigning field trip and mid-day routes and maintains appropriate field trip and mid-day route documents.
• Manages bus driver payroll with the assistance of the Lead Bus Driver and the Financial Secretary (reviewed and approved by the Principal).
• Assists with emergency school bus passenger safety and evacuation drills and training.
• Manages bus responsibilities for the feeder area with the implementation of the two-tier bus system.
• Acts as a school liaison to the Transportation Department.
• Supervises, coordinates, and participates in routine bus driver meetings.
• Submits documents in a timely manner to the Transportation Department, such as bus-related work orders. bus route/driver summary forms, bonus documents, travel allowance documents, Exception and Activity Use Vehicle Reports, and DPI reports.
• Analyzes and resolves problems independently within the limits of the employee’s assigned authority.
• Assimilates information from a variety of sources to compose letters, generate reports, and provide informational data.
• Manages unusual situations requiring discretionary judgment, analysis, and independent action.
• Other duties as assigned by the Principal.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Must be prompt and reliable.
• Must possess good organizational skills with the ability to communicate effectively in person and by telephone.
• Ability to read, interpret, and convey to others documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
• Ability to operate a variety of office machines.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions and procedures.
• Ability to file records and reports in proper and sequential order.
• Knowledge of the proper care and operation of a school bus and safe driving skills.
• Knowledge of specific rules and regulations governing the operation of a school bus.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school system staff, students, parents, external agencies, and the community.
• Must be proficient in Word and Excel and utilize other software programs as needed.
• Ability to work in an office environment and on a school bus or school transportation vehicle and come into direct contact with school system staff, students, and parents.
• Must possess the visual acuity to prepare data, work with record processes, and do extensive reading and research.
• Must possess the ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
Physical Requirements
• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear.
• The employee occasionally is required to sit and stoop, kneel, or crouch.
• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
• The employee must be able to perform sedentary work and occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
• Must be able to perform light work, exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Additional Requirements
• While performing the duties of this job, the temperature on the bus could be cold or hot, depending on the weather.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license and have or be willing to obtain a commercial driver’s license (CDL) “B” or “C” Class with “P” and “S” endorsements.
Education, Experience, and Additional Requirements
• Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent.
• Associates degree preferred.
• Successful leadership experience.
