Leonardo DRS is a trusted provider of innovative naval gas and hybrid power systems for the U.S. Navy and navies around the world. They are seeking a highly skilled Principal Engineer-Commercial Nuclear to drive the design, development, and integration of digital and analog electronic systems, ensuring performance and reliability of mission-critical systems.
Responsibilities:
- Design, troubleshoot and implement digital and analog systems incorporating A/D, D/A, microprocessors and microcontrollers
- Provide obsolescence management for legacy analog systems, including the selection and justification of alternate/substitute components
- Generate proposals related to upgrades of existing installed legacy systems as well as new system installations. This includes both technical descriptions and budget/schedule estimates
- Provide schedule, and technical compliance updates to management to effectively manage the execution of complex design programs
- Validate system performance using analysis, simulation, and laboratory testing
- Generate complete system documentation and provide input to technical proposals to effectively communicate the design and/or approach to our internal and external customers
- Apply Design for X (DfX) methodologies including but not limited to Design for Cost, Design for Test, and Design for Manufacturability into the products being developed
- Independently develop and implement corrective action to product and procedural problems identified
- Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior engineers, fostering a culture of innovation and excellence
- Communicate with the customer and internal management as a technical expert to achieve cost effective, technically compliant best in class design solutions
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives related to power electronics design processes and methodologies
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering
- Minimum of 8 years of experience in electronic system design and development
- Experience with a range of technologies, including processor architectures (e.g., Motorola 68000/MC68360, PowerPC, TI DSP), digital logic (TTL/HC), FPGA/toolchains (Xilinx ISE, Altera, Actel/Microsemi SmartFusion with Libero), and interfaces (PCI/PCIe, VME64x, ECC memory)
- Proficiency with design tools such as Cadence OrCAD and Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Visio, PowerPoint)
- Strong product development experience with demonstrated problem-solving and troubleshooting capabilities
- Proven ability to collaborate effectively within cross-functional engineering teams
- Demonstrated leadership experience guiding technical teams and projects
- Experience designing Single Event Upset (SEU)-tolerant systems
- Familiarity with U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) regulations, policies, and procedures
- Experience with Commercial Grade Item Dedication (CGID) for nuclear safety applications
- Knowledge of commercial nuclear and/or military specifications and design practices
- U.S. Citizenship required. This position requires the ability to obtain such clearance within a reasonable time after commencement of employment
