Software Engineering Technical Lead

The UVA VEC is seeking experienced software engineering professionals for an advanced AI research project focused on evaluating cutting-edge AI systems. The role involves assessing AI-generated software solutions, analyzing architecture and code quality, identifying technical issues, and providing detailed feedback to improve AI coding models. The position is fully remote and structured as an independent contractor opportunity.

Responsibilities:

• Evaluate AI-generated software engineering solutions across complex technical scenarios
• Analyze system architecture, software design, scalability, maintainability, and code quality
• Identify implementation issues, edge cases, bugs, and performance bottlenecks
• Compare multiple AI-generated solutions and determine the strongest implementation using structured evaluation criteria
• Provide detailed technical reasoning and written feedback to improve AI model performance
• Apply consistent engineering judgment across a variety of real-world software engineering tasks
• Collaborate remotely with AI researchers and engineering reviewers to maintain evaluation quality

Requirements:

• • 10+ years of professional software engineering experience
• • Experience building large-scale production systems at leading technology companies
• • Strong background in software architecture, distributed systems, backend engineering, cloud infrastructure, and scalable applications
• • Excellent coding, debugging, and system design skills
• • Proven experience reviewing complex codebases and making high-level technical decisions
• • Outstanding written communication and technical documentation abilities
• • Passion for advancing AI technologies and improving AI-assisted software engineering
• • Previous experience with AI evaluation, technical assessments, or code review projects is an advantage
