Manager, Production Site Reliability Engineering

Vultr provides high-performance, affordable cloud infrastructure for enterprises and AI innovators worldwide. The company is seeking a Manager of Production Site Reliability Engineering to build and lead a team responsible for the availability, performance, and operability of its production control plane. The role combines technical and people leadership across incident response, observability, configuration management, capacity planning, database operations, and control plane re-architecture.

Responsibilities:

• Build and lead the Production Site Reliability Engineering team: hire, mentor, and grow a team of SREs and database engineers responsible for the production control plane
• Own the availability, performance, and operability of the production web stack
• Lead incident response for production-impacting events; drive postmortems and turn lessons into durable system improvements, runbooks, and alerting
• Own configuration management for the production environment, ensuring consistent, repeatable, and auditable infrastructure across all control plane hosts
• Partner with engineering teams across the organization to ensure new services are production-ready: observable, deployable, and documented before they reach customers
• Drive the control plane re-architecture: stand up new infrastructure, manage parallel runs and cutover, and ensure the new environment meets production readiness standards for monitoring, alerting, and capacity
• Set the operational roadmap for the production environment: capacity planning, scaling strategy, disaster recovery, and the evolution of the architecture toward a more distributed, resilient design
• Establish and maintain monitoring, alerting, and observability across the production stack and ensure the team has the visibility needed to respond to issues before customers do
• Manage the production database and caching environment: replication topology, performance tuning, backup verification, and failover testing
• Foster a culture of operational excellence: regular operational reviews, SLO definition and tracking, blameless postmortems, and continuous improvement of runbooks and deployment processes

Requirements:

• 10+ years of professional experience in site reliability engineering or infrastructure operations, with at least 2 years in a team lead or management role
• Deep experience operating production web stacks at scale. You should be comfortable debugging performance issues across the full request path from load balancer to database
• Strong Linux systems knowledge: networking, systemd, package management, firewall configuration, and performance tuning. You should be the person who can figure out why a server is slow and fix it
• Track record of building and operating monitoring and alerting systems and driving a culture of observability and proactive incident response
• Experience with configuration management at scale (Puppet, Ansible, Chef, or similar) and a strong opinion on what belongs in config management vs. what should be code
• Strong written and verbal communication: runbooks, postmortems, incident communications to leadership, and cross-functional coordination with engineering and datacenter operations teams
• Experience hiring and building engineering teams: you will be the hiring manager for this team and responsible for its growth and culture
• Experience with database replication, backup strategies, and failure modes. You do not need to be a DBA, but you need to understand replication topology, know when a query plan is bad, and be able to lead a database failover without panicking
• Experience leading production migrations or major infrastructure transitions: planning, parallel runs, validation, and safe cutover with minimal customer impact
• experience with Harvester or similar HCI platforms for running production workloads on VMs
• experience with Redis cluster architecture, failover, and performance tuning at scale
• experience with HAProxy configuration, keepalived, and load balancing strategies for high-traffic web applications
• experience with PCI compliance environments and operating systems and networks that handle cardholder data
• experience writing PHP, even if rusty. Our control plane has significant PHP surfaces and you will be working closely with the teams that maintain them
• experience with Cloudflare or similar CDN/edge platforms and managing DNS cutover for production services
