Software Engineering Manager

Cartney is seeking engineering leaders to drive the execution of complex, highly available distributed systems. The role combines technical architecture, team mentorship, delivery leadership, stakeholder engagement, and adoption of AI-assisted development workflows.

Responsibilities:

• System & Cloud Architecture: Design and scale high-availability microservices while managing production workloads on AWS EKS and Red Hat OpenShift
• Engineering Excellence & Automation: Define and govern coding patterns, scaling automation across CI/CD and Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, CloudFormation, or Ansible)
• AI-Assisted Innovation: Champion agentic workflows (e.g., Claude Code, Copilot, Cursor) and LLM integration patterns (RAG, prompt design, MCP) to improve team velocity
• AI Governance & Compliance: Establish standards for secure AI coding, avoiding data leakage, and ensuring strict alignment with health plan data privacy (PHI)
• People & Delivery Leadership: Mentor engineers and leads, drive workforce planning, own program delivery commitments, and manage risks
• Stakeholder & Business Growth: Build relationships with C-level client stakeholders and partner with executives to shape proposals and scope new engagements

Requirements:

• 8–10 years of software engineering experience with technical project or small team leadership depth
• 10–12 years of experience with 5+ years in engineering leadership managing multiple teams
• 12–15+ years with a track record of leading large engineering organizations or account-level portfolio delivery
• Deep understanding of distributed systems fundamentals (consistency models, fault tolerance, Kafka, SQS/SNS)
• Expert-level proficiency in Go and Python, with working proficiency in Node.js
• Strong executive presence with the ability to present complex technical roadmaps to internal and client leadership
• Domain expertise in US health insurance or payer systems (claims, enrollment, benefits) and HIPAA compliance
• Familiarity with healthcare data standards like HL7, FHIR, and X12 EDI
• Prior experience in a client-facing professional services or IT consulting environment
