What We're Looking For:
Michael Baker International is seeking a Senior Traffic Technical Manager – Traffic/ITS to support and help lead our 35+ person Traffic Engineering and ITS team across the Northeast. This role provides technical leadership, project oversight, and business development support for transportation and ITS projects serving clients such as NJDOT, NYSDOT, NYCDOT, NYC‑DDC, PANYNJ, NJTA, and other regional agencies.
The Senior Technical Manager will collaborate with multi‑disciplinary teams to lead project pursuit, design, and delivery, provide technical expertise and quality oversight, and mentor engineers and project managers. Responsibilities include overseeing ITS systems engineering, design, construction, and testing, supporting C‑V2X/CAV and emerging technologies, and ensuring compliance with agency standards across multiple jurisdictions.
This role also supports business development efforts, builds strong client relationships, and maintains an active presence within the NJ/NY transportation community.
Hybrid and flexible work options are available with offices in Newark and Hamilton, NJ, and New York City.
What You'll Do:
- Serve as Senior Technical Manager and advisor for local, regional, and national traffic and ITS projects, providing technical leadership on complex and strategic initiatives.
- Support project pursuits and proposals, contributing technical expertise, scope development, and fee estimates while interfacing with clients to ensure quality and satisfaction.
- Lead and mentor multi‑disciplinary teams of engineers, project managers, and designers through all phases of design and delivery for roadway, highway, and safety improvement projects.
- Oversee project execution to meet scope, schedule, budget, and quality objectives, providing technical oversight, QA/QC, and staff development.
- Coordinate traffic and ITS efforts across NJ and NY offices, ensuring consistent standards, collaboration, and delivery excellence.
- Provide leadership in ITS, emerging technologies (EV, CV/AV), and specialty technical areas, supporting innovation and systems integration.
- Build and maintain strong client, industry, and internal relationships, maintaining an active presence in the NJ/NY transportation community and professional organizations.
What You Need to Succeed:
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related field is required. Master's degree desired.
- 20+ years of Traffic Engineering design experience including 5+ years of technical management experience. Ideal candidates will have extensive experience with NJDOT, NJTA, NYSDOT, NYCDOT, NYCDDC, PANYNJ and/or NYSTA.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license in New Jersey and/or New York required, and PTOE certification highly preferred
- Ability to qualify as a Project Manager and/or Lead Traffic/ITS Engineer on NJ and NY projects.
- Skills to perform QC Oversight responsibilities. This includes an understanding of the technical design and constructability requirements and risk management skills needed to provide those quality reviews.
- Ability to leverage on existing connections and client relationships to help identify and/or win new traffic engineering/ITS work.
- Knowledge and experience in Oracle-based (or similar) resource and financial management platforms.
- Strong background in ownership, initiative and dedication to high quality engineering services and client deliverables.
Compensation:
The approximate compensation range for this position is $150,000 to $195,000. This compensation range is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation is dependent upon factors such as education, qualifications, experience, skillset, and physical work location.
