The Lead Engineer, Systems Development will provide subject matter expertise in thermal management system design and collaborate with product teams to enhance system performance and efficiency.
Responsibilities:
- Provide subject matter expertise in thermal management system design for the data center and semiconductor ecosystem, while maintaining broad HVAC systems and product knowledge
- Build deep knowledge and understanding of equipment operation and limitations and apply this knowledge with a critical eye to system design, analysis, control and operation
- Develop thermal management systems using Trane or sourced equipment and controls including project scoping, concept development, engineering analysis, creation of commercialization content and tools, and system validation
- Influence and provide deep technical support and analysis into system-level reference design strategy and execution, working in close cooperation with partners, customers and peers
- Evaluate complex, special, and advanced engineering problems working independently with minimal supervision
- Serve as subject matter expert on capabilities to improve existing systems and processes
- Collaborate with and influence product teams to achieve common objectives
- May provide periodic routine to intensive technical guidance to less experienced professionals or technicians assigned to work on large projects
- Analyze system issues using appropriate modeling tools and techniques. Where needed, collaborate with modeling and simulation specialists to develop new tools
- Develop and document thermal management system modes, sequence of operations, and other system level control requirements
- Perform field validation through digital and jobsite fulfillment and analysis activity
- Provide key technical support in pursuit of Trane business, including participation on strategic job acquisition teams
- Develop and deliver technical presentations for customers and industry association events
- Serve on industry association committees such as ASHRAE in the development of technical materials, codes and/or standards
- Overnight travel 5 – 15% depending on assigned projects, some international travel is possible
Requirements:
- A Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an accredited four-year college or university with a strong thermal/fluid energy and/or controls background
- A minimum of 8 years of relevant engineering work experience
- Ability to travel independently both domestically and internationally
- Engineering background in data center/high-tech design is required
- Strong technical skills with a natural curiosity and enthusiasm to learn and develop new skills
- Technically creative yet grounded in real world feasibility
- Able to perform thorough and objective analysis
- Able to collaborate with and influence others
- Self-motivated and disciplined
- Willing and able to transfer knowledge to other groups
- Good stand-up skills in front of customers and the field sales force
- Polished and professional, particularly with customers and in professional societies
- Strong written and oral communication skills. Can effectively identify key ideas and develop organized content to share those ideas across a diverse stakeholder group
- Ability to speak and write in English
- Able to effectively use Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- An MBA is beneficial but is not required
- Completion of the Trane Graduate Training Program is beneficial but is not required
- A Professional Engineering license is beneficial but is not required
- Experience with PLC controls is a plus
- Experience with onsite power generation and/or backup power distribution is a plus
- Knowledge of HVAC products, components, and systems is desired
- Strong thermal/fluid energy and/or controls background is a plus
