GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Performs highly complex work assisting the Principal with the administration and management of a state school for youth who have been adjudicated delinquent of felony offenses, committed to the agency by a juvenile court, and assigned to a high security correctional facility. Assists with instructional and education personnel management and uses leadership and teambuilding skills to motivate educational staff and youth to work toward common objectives and establishes a positive school climate. Assists with overseeing daily educational facility operations and activities. Interacts with the secure facility’s administrators, case managers and specialized treatment staff, and correctional staff to support the youth treatment programs and the facility’s security measures. Collaborates with the Principal to ensure achievement of educational goals and objectives.
Works under limited supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Promotes improvement of instruction by monitoring student achievement and attendance by: monitoring student needs and assisting teachers in designing interventions to meet those needs; encouraging education staff personnel to integrate assessment with instruction to ensure that relevant learning opportunities are provided for all students; encouraging the development and piloting of innovative instructional programs; facilitating the planning and application of emerging technologies in the classroom; assisting and monitoring daily operation of instruction; and working with the staff to plan, implement, and evaluate curriculum/methods of instruction on a systematic basis.
Fosters a positive school climate by establishing clear communication between departments by: promoting a positive, nurturing climate of learning; using effective oral and written communication skills; having a clear sense of the agency’s goals and actively involving the education staff in planning and decision-making in order to accomplish the agency’s goals; and adhering to TJJD standards, regulations, and procedures, including consistently contributing to making the school safe and orderly.
Manages education personnel effectively by treating staff with respect as professionals by: delegating appropriately; recognizing and praising exemplary performance of teachers and staff; fostering personal and professional growth and leadership among the staff; effectively evaluating the job performance of assigned personnel; interviewing, selecting, and training new and temporary staff; making sound recommendations relative to personnel placement, transfer, retention, and dismissal; documenting staff performance deficiencies effectively and developing appropriate growth plans; and encouraging professional ethics among all staff.
Manages administrative, fiscal, and education facility functions by submitting accurate, complete and objective reports or proposals by: ensuring compliance with all applicable federal, state and local policies, rules and regulations; obtaining input for development of budget; compiling reasonable budgets and cost estimates; ensuring that equipment/programs are maintained and upgraded as necessary; and managing department operations (i.e. attendance, personnel, accounting, payroll, budget, utilities, etc.).
Promotes positive student conduct by helping students develop a sense of self-worth by: developing and communicating guidelines for student conduct; ensuring that campus rules are uniformly observed and that consequences of misconduct are applied equitably to all students; recognizing exemplary behavior and decision-making skills of students; supporting collaboration by working with faculty and other facility staff; and encouraging student and parental involvement.
Provides leadership in professional growth and development by actively participating in professional associations by: conducting himself or herself in an ethical and professional manner; disseminating ideas and information to other professionals; and seeking and using evaluative information for improvement of performance.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Master’s degree with major course work in Education, Education Administration, or a related field. Three years (3) of full-time wage-earning experience as a teacher at the secondary level, 6-12 or one (1) year of full-time wage-earning experience that may be any combination of the following: an assistant principal or principal at the secondary level; a secondary level or district administrator; or a superintendent of education.
Required:
· Valid Texas Mid-Management Administrator, Administrator, Principal, or Superintendent certification.
Preferred:
· Experience working in a correctional environment or with high-risk youth as an administrator or teacher.
Note: Any degree, diploma, high school equivalent, or course hours required to meet minimum qualifications must be from an accredited educational institution.
Requirements for Continued Employment:
· Failure to maintain required licenses/certifications will result in termination of employment.
