The Specialist Controls Engineer is responsible for defining control system architecture and leading complex automation programs, ensuring high-quality control system solutions that meet various objectives.
Responsibilities:
- You will define and maintain control system architecture, standards, and best practices, including development of reusable code libraries, templates, and modular design approaches
- You will lead the design, development, deployment, and commissioning of complex PLC and HMI systems for material handling applications
- You will provide technical oversight and lead design reviews for large-scale and high-risk projects, ensuring robust system integration across controls, interfaces, and third-party equipment
- You will lead controls engineering scope across multiple concurrent projects or programs, ensuring on-time, on-budget delivery, including risk identification and mitigation
- You will support ROM estimates, proposals, and technical solution development, including resource planning and workload allocation
- You will oversee system validation, integration testing, and site acceptance testing (SAT), ensuring adherence to quality, testing, and documentation standards
- You will drive improvements in engineering and commissioning efficiency, including troubleshooting escalation support and optimization of startup and field execution performance
- You will collaborate cross-functionally with internal teams and external stakeholders, while mentoring and developing junior engineers through coaching and training initiatives
Requirements:
- You have obtained a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, controls engineering, mechatronics, or a related technical field, and 10 years of experience in controls engineering within material handling, automation, or related industry
- You have advanced proficiency with Rockwell Automation (ControlLogix, GuardLogix, Studio 5000) and Siemens platforms (TIA Portal, S7)
- You have advanced knowledge of industrial networks, including EtherNet/IP, Profinet, and safety networks
- You have strong experience in control system architecture, integration, and large-scale material handling systems, including sortation, conveyors, AS/RS, and robotics
- You have strong experience with HMI/SCADA development, system visualization, and software development lifecycle (SDLC), testing, and quality assurance processes
- You are knowledgeable of electrical design principles, device selection, and control panel integration
- You have proven ability to lead technical direction and manage project scope, schedules, and budgets across multiple concurrent projects or programs
- You have strong technical decision-making and stakeholder influence skills, with the ability to communicate complex concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences
- You can manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment and travel domestically up to 60% to support commissioning, customer meetings, and critical project phases

- Your master's degree in a related engineering discipline is preferred, and may be considered in place of up to two years of experience
- Your professional certifications, such as Certified Automation Professional (CAP) or TUV Functional Safety Engineer is preferred
