Lead Backend Platform Engineer

January AI is a pioneering company focused on improving metabolic health through AI-powered precision health solutions. They are seeking a Lead Backend Platform Engineer to own and enhance backend services, APIs, and AI infrastructure, while ensuring system reliability and maintainability.

Responsibilities:

• Own backend services that power our app and partner-facing products
• Lead design, implementation, and maintenance of APIs, microservices, and service-to-service workflows
• Own the AI infrastructure that powers our health intelligence: model serving, prompt and retrieval pipelines, and the integrations that turn clinical and lifestyle data into trustworthy AI output
• Own the offline evaluation harness — golden datasets, regression detection, cost-vs-quality tradeoffs — and use it to ship prompt and pipeline changes with confidence
• Partner with the AI Lead, who drives model research and clinical content; you own the systems that get those models into users' hands reliably and measurably
• Work with our DevOps engineer on cloud infrastructure and infrastructure-as-code (Terraform)
• Improve production reliability, observability, alerting, incident response, and debugging workflows
• Drive architectural improvements that simplify service boundaries and reduce operational fragility
• Improve the quality, consistency, and maintainability of backend systems across the stack
• Partner closely with product, frontend, and AI to deliver robust systems
• Help define and enforce strong engineering standards around service design, testing, deployment, monitoring, and operational ownership
• Step into ambiguous, cross-functional problems and drive them to resolution with minimal oversight
