Highway Maintenance Vehicle and Equipment Mechanic

Equipment Mechanic I: Performs repair/maintenance and inspection related work for fleet vehicles and equipment in the Fleet Operations Division Shop or a District Maintenance Section. Work may require maintenance and repair of heavy equipment used in construction of highways/bridges and inspecting work performed by contracted vendors. Work may require contact with other governmental agencies and private contractors. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments, however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Equipment Mechanic II: Performs advanced repair/maintenance and inspection related work for fleet vehicles and equipment in the Fleet Operations Division Shop or a District Maintenance Section. Inspects work performed by shop mechanics and/or contracted vendors. Work may require
maintenance and repair of heavy equipment used in the construction of highways/bridges. Work may require contact with other
governmental agencies and private contractors. Employees at this level perform independently on assignments; however, all unusual
issues are referred to the supervisor.

Equipment Mechanic III: Performs highly advanced repair/maintenance and inspection related work for fleet vehicles and equipment in the Fleet Operations Division Shop or District Maintenance Section. Inspects work performed by shop mechanics and/or contracted vendors. Work may
require maintenance and repair of heavy equipment used in the construction of highways/bridges. Serves as a lead worker and trains
less experienced technicians. Work may require contact with other governmental agencies and private contractors. Employees at this
level perform independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.
 

Essential Duties:

Equipment Mechanic I: 

• Handles and disposes of environmentally hazardous materials in accordance with federal and state laws.
• Checks lighting and wiring mechanisms to ensure proper functioning of headlights, spotlights, tail lights and parking
  lights.
• Completes repair order paperwork and accurately enters data into fleet information management system.
• Orders, picks up and delivers parts, materials, tools, and operates equipment and vehicles to include heavy equipment.
• Performs preventive maintenance, inspections and repairs on motor vehicles/equipment; as required moves items related to
  these activities.
• Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
   

Equipment Mechanic II:

• Trains less experienced technicians.
• Analyzes and interprets computerized diagnostic equipment information.
• Handles and disposes of environmentally hazardous materials in accordance with federal and state laws.
• Checks lighting and wiring mechanisms to ensure proper functioning of headlights, spotlights, tail lights and parking
  lights.
• Completes repair order paperwork and accurately enters data into fleet information management system.
• Maintains and repairs heavy equipment used in construction and maintenance of highways/bridges.
• Orders, picks up and delivers parts, materials, tools, and operates equipment and vehicles to include heavy equipment.
• Performs preventive maintenance, inspections and repairs on motor vehicles/equipment; as required moves items related to
  these activities.
• Reads and interprets schematics, diagrams and blueprints.
• Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Equipment Mechanic III

• Leads and trains less experienced technicians.
• Adjusts brakes and replaces brake system parts to include air brake and anti-locking systems.
• Analyzes and interprets computerized diagnostic equipment information.
• Handles and disposes of environmentally hazardous materials in accordance with federal and state laws.
• Checks lighting and wiring mechanisms to ensure proper functioning of headlights, spotlights, tail lights and parking
  lights.
• Completes repair order paperwork and accurately enters data into fleet information management system.
• Maintains and repairs heavy equipment used in construction and maintenance of highways/bridges.
• Orders, picks up and delivers parts, materials, tools, and operates equipment and vehicles to include heavy equipment.
• Overhauls motors and transmissions.
• Performs acetylene and electric arc welding repairs.
• Performs emergency spot repairs.
• Performs preventive maintenance, inspections and repairs on motor vehicles/equipment; as required moves items related to
  these activities.
• Performs quality assurance/analysis on repaired vehicles and equipment.
• Prepares vehicles for sale.
• Prepares vehicles for use by checking for required safety features such as first aid kits, fire extinguishers and mobile
  radios.
• Reads and interprets schematics, diagrams and blueprints.
• Repairs and adjusts steering assemblies.
• Repairs vehicle air conditioning systems.
• Troubleshoots, tests and repairs electrical systems, electronic ignitions and fuel injection systems.
• Uses computerized diagnostic analyzer systems and performs complex diagnostic work on vehicles/equipment.
• Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
   

Minimum Qualifications:

Experience:

Equipment Mechanic I: 2 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications 

Equipment Mechanic II:  4 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications 

Equipment Mechanic III: 7 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications 

• Associate's degree in Automotive and/or Diesel Technology may substitute for 2 year's experience.
• Certificates of course completion from a Technical Training Institute in Automotive and Diesel Technology may substitute for experience on a year for year basis.

Licenses and Certifications:

• Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

• Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or have obtained a Class "A" CDL, within 45 calendar days from date of employment.
