Staff Product Designer, Design Systems

HubSpot is an AI-powered customer platform providing software, integrations, and resources for businesses to connect marketing, sales, and service. The Staff Product Designer will shape a major area of Trellis, HubSpot’s enterprise design system, across tokens and visual language, components, or patterns. The role involves making system-level design decisions, partnering cross-functionally, improving adoption and governance, and modernizing the system for AI-assisted product development.

Responsibilities:

• Own and evolve a major focus area within Trellis, either Tokens and Visual Language, Components, or Patterns
• Partner with product, engineering, content design, research, and design technology to define system guidance that is usable, scalable, accessible, and practical to implement
• Make high-judgment system decisions that balance consistency, flexibility, accessibility, technical constraints, product team needs, and customer experience
• Help reduce fragmentation across HubSpot by creating shared foundations that teams can trust, adopt, and contribute to
• Improve alignment between Figma, documentation, and front-end implementation so Trellis becomes easier to use and harder to misuse
• Define documentation and usage guidance that helps designers, engineers, and AI assisted tools understand how to apply the system correctly
• Partner with product teams to understand adoption friction, edge cases, implementation gaps, and emerging needs
• Contribute to governance and contribution models that allow Trellis to evolve without creating drift
• Support accessibility, internationalization, responsive behavior, and implementation quality as core requirements of the system
• Collaborate with design technologists and engineers on component APIs, design tokens, implementation fidelity, usage constraints, acceptance criteria, and system tooling
• Hold a high quality bar for the system while building trust with teams across the organization
• Help Trellis become more machine readable as well as human readable, so it can support AI coding tools, MCP integrations, and future generative UI workflows

Requirements:

• Extensive experience with enterprise design systems or complex multi-product platforms, spanning governance, adoption, documentation, accessibility, contribution models, and cross-team influence — not just component creation
• A strong spike in one or more areas: tokens and visual language, reusable components, product patterns, accessibility, documentation, governance, adoption, or Figma-to-code alignment
• Deep experience in at least one of: enterprise SaaS, CRM, developer tools, commerce, data-heavy products, AI-assisted workflows, or other complex product environments
• Experience designing reusable components across anatomy, states, variants, behaviors, accessibility, responsive rules, and implementation constraints
• Experience owning visual foundations at scale — tokens, theming, color, typography, iconography, and motion
• Strong engineering partnership on component APIs, tokens, documentation, implementation fidelity, and front-end architecture
• A track record of improving adoption, contribution models, governance, migration, and team enablement
• Staff-level autonomy: identifying the right problems, setting direction, influencing partners, and driving resolution without close oversight
• Strong product craft with the ability to balance consistency, flexibility, usability, accessibility, and implementation reality
• Curiosity and rigor around evolving design systems for AI-assisted product development
• A portfolio showing system-level work — not isolated screens or visual explorations
• Clear communication of system decisions to designers, engineers, product leaders, and non-specialist stakeholders
