Provide toxicology and safety expertise to product development programs, ensuring safe and compliant product design from concept through commercialization
Manage and interpret complex scientific data related to product safety, ensuring robust data stewardship and integrity within regulatory submissions
Assess raw materials, ingredients, and finished formulations for safety, considering: Chemical structure and toxicological profiles, Exposure scenarios and dosage, Product use patterns and target populations, Stability, microbiological, and test data
Partner with R&D to support early-stage screening of formulations and proactive risk mitigation
Lead and execute comprehensive safety evaluations of cosmetic products and ingredients using available toxicological, clinical, and scientific data
Identify and assess potential risks for specific products and intended end users, including scenarios with higher or unique exposure conditions
Develop and apply risk identification and assessment frameworks for cosmetic ingredients and formulations
Continuously enhance cosmetovigilance program and lead the monitoring and evaluation of adverse event data, ensuring timely reporting, identifying emerging trends, and recommending corrective actions as needed
Ensure alignment with global regulatory expectations for post-market safety monitoring
Lead regulatory toxicology assessments for new and existing ingredients, including support for global registration requirements
Assess ingredients critical to product safety and integrity, including emerging materials to ensure global regulatory compliance
Define and implement next-generation safety strategies, including the use of in silico tools and alternative methods
Design and oversee safety testing programs, including: In vitro and in vivo studies (as applicable and compliant with regulations) and Clinical and consumer safety testing
Manage network of external laboratories and clinical research organizations (CROs) to ensure high-quality data generation.
Recommend appropriate precautions, warnings, and usage instructions based on safety assessments
Partner with business units to ensure accurate safety-related information is reflected on product labeling and packaging
Support claims substantiation from a safety and toxicology perspective
Drive change management initiatives related to evolving regulatory landscapes and internal safety guidelines, ensuring seamless adoption across relevant departments
Participate in trade associations, industry groups, and scientific forums related to toxicology and risk assessment
Support regulatory dossiers and provide scientific defense of products and ingredients as needed
Act as a subject matter expert in regulated processes, providing guidance and support to R&D, Product Development, Legal, and business teams on toxicology-related matters
Develop and deliver training programs on safety standards and regulatory compliance to various internal audiences
Requirements
Minimum Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, Toxicology or similar
Advanced degree preferred, advanced degree (PhD preferred) in Toxicology, Pharmacology, Chemistry, or related scientific field.
At least 8+ years of experience in cosmetic or consumer product safety/toxicology
Strong expertise in Cosmetic ingredient safety assessment and risk evaluation, Exposure-based risk assessment methodologies, and Global regulatory toxicology requirements
Experience in applying a variety of methods (e.g. literature, in vitro, in vivo) to support safety assessments and registration of cosmetic ingredients and products
Engaged in relevant trade associations and societies to ensure approaches are consistent with industry standards/best practices
Proven scientific and leadership track record in Safety Sciences (publications, oral communications) preferred
