Job Title: Senior Material Engineer (Organics Resins & Polymer Specialist)

Position Summary
This position will lead material investigation, analysis, and testing for products made of plastic resins, polymers, and other organic compounds. Team member will work alongside our existing metallurgists at the North American QA Center in Seymour, Indiana, with the goal of expanding our non-metals analysis capabilities. This position will utilize existing test equipment while also establishing future equipment capabilities and improving testing methods.
Materials analysis requests may come from any source in our automotive parts supply chain. Typical production processes supported include resin molding, adhesion, coatings, and lubrication.
Position Responsibilities
The incumbent is expected to perform the following functions that the company has determined are essential to this position:
- Perform material testing and potential material related failure analysis investigations on submitted samples and sub-assemblies in a timely fashion and provide a detailed analysis and conclusion documented in a standard AISIN format report.
- Analysis includes determining proper investigation sequence, performing hands-on sample preparation, teardown, and testing as required.
- Assist AISIN North American manufacturing plant locations, as needed, with quality improvement activity.
- Maintain analysis equipment and tools, as assigned, in the NA QA Center material analysis laboratory.
- Assist in sourcing equipment and support material as necessary for effective and efficient operation of the North American QA Center materials laboratory.
- Support activities shown in association with the AISIN North American Quality Assurance annual job plan as well as the long-term business plan.
- Work closely with the AISIN New Materials Engineering Group & Quality staff to develop a "One AISIN" team attitude.
- Assist in the development of operational (Quality) manuals and training material for identified key quality methods and concepts. Plan, schedule, and deliver training sessions, as needed/requested, by AWA management or NAP locations.
- Other tasks and duties as assigned.
Required Skills and Abilities
Essential Skills and Experience:
- Experience performing analysis and material investigations for non-metallic organic materials such as plastic resins, polymers, adhesives, lubricants, etc.
- Expertise with FT-IR, TGA, and DSC
- Strong Failure Analysis/ Troubleshooting skills
- Desire to do hands-on lab work
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs
- Technical report writing and effective communication skills
- Ability to coordinate and negotiate with customers and AISIN facilities
Beneficial Skills and Experience
- Experience with organic production processes such as injection molding, adhesion, vibration and laser welding, and painting / coating
- Working knowledge of a wide array of advanced analysis equipment (spectrometers, physical properties testing, chemical analysis, etc.)
- Knowledge of Seven Basic QC Tools
- Experience with metallic materials and processes
Education/Training/Certifications
- B.S. in Materials Engineering, Chemistry or a related field.
- 5-10+ years of related experience is preferred.
