Endoscopy Technician

Under supervision, with emphasis upon the provision of maximum patient care, assists in all services necessary for proper operation of the Endoscopy Unit.

Job Standards and Performance Expectations
1.   Patient Care
a.   Sets up carts, equipment and supplies required of specific procedures.
b.   Stocks all rooms with necessary equipment, supplies, and accessories.
c.   Coordinates the selection and use of proper patient chargeable.
d.   Appropriately charges for items used in patient care.
e.   Assists in batching patient charges daily, and delivering batched charges to Data Processing.
f.   Organizes and delivers service/care in the proper sequence. 
g.   Assists in providing patient education on Endoscopy in regards to monitoring the devices, oxygen cannula, and temperature indicator.
h.   Assists in transport and movement of the patient. 
i.   Implements safety procedures for each patient based on population-specific needs and patient status.
j.   Collects specimens and transport to the lab in a timely manner as required.
k.   Displays sensitivity to the needs of patient and other customers with emotional as well as technical clinical support. Demonstrates good communication skills, and empathy. Treats patients, visitors, family members, co-workers and all who enter the facility in a courteous manner.
l.   Performs patient care and support activities in a manner that recognizes the importance of the patient's time. Responds promptly to patients and co-workers' requests/need in a timely manner.
m.   Able to evaluate and follow-up on his/her own services. Provides all necessary services to those patients and staff members with whom she/he works.
 

2.   Quality
a.   Demonstrates the ability to utilize supplies in a cost-effective manner and ensure that all chargeable items have a charge generated.
b.   Assists with ordering of stock supplies from Material Management.
c.   Assists in reconciliation of lost charges.
d.   Identifies and intervenes to reduce waste of costly supplies by other personnel.
e.   Appropriate use of Supply Omnicell system.
f.   Works carefully and precisely without creating unnecessary errors. Pays close attention to details.
g.   Displays good organization skills and utilizes time wisely.
h.   Does not spend an excessive amount of time on rework or accruing unnecessary over time.
i.   Assumes responsibility for patient's clothing and personal property while in Endoscopy by securing items in accordance with established procedures.
j.   Identifies patient by checking armband, ensures that safety rails are up during transport and that brakes are locked on stretchers and wheelchairs before moving the patient.
k.   Identifies and rectifies sources of potential accidents by maintaining cleanliness of the rooms, proper disposal of garbage and hazardous waste materials.
l.   Consistently check light sources, instruments, and accessory equipment for proper functioning and notifies charge nurse when problem is found.
m.   Adheres to the Blood borne Pathogen regulations as established by OSHA.
n.   Checks weekly for outdated supplies in storage areas and rotates, sterilizes, and restocks according to accepted Endoscopy procedure.
o.   Properly cleans and disinfects the endoscopes according to Infection Control guidelines.
p.   Demonstrates an awareness of risk management issues governing the delivery of patient care.
q.   Utilizes time to accomplish work in an efficient manner.
r.   Employee shall conform to regulatory, customer and organizational requirements.
s.   Operates equipment and performs job-related duties in a safe manner.
t.   Responds appropriately to fire, safety and disaster situations. Utilizes Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in the appropriate manner for optimal personal protection. 

3.   Collaboration & Teamwork
a.   Assists nurses and physicians with Endoscopic procedures.
b.   Participates in ongoing Endoscopic teaching and updating of information, equipment, instrumentation and supplies.
c.   Works with other employees and departments to coordinates services.
d.   Demonstrates knowledge and skills to implement the protocol in the event of an internal disaster.
e.   Working knowledge of all sterilization protocol, steam and gas autoclaves, chemical, disinfectants, ultrasonic washer, Steris Sterilizer, instruments and products for patient care procedures, sterilization and packaging.
f.   Cleans, sterilizers, and packages all endoscopic accessories per hospital protocol.
g.   Works independently in a safe and appropriate manner. Demonstrates both problem-solving and problem prevention skills. Treat patients and co-workers in an ethical manner. Puts the patients well-being before personal, financial, or procedural concerns. 
h.   When requested, adjusts personal schedule to meet department/unit needs.

4.   Other Duties As Assigned
a.   Participates in continuing education by attending in-service and department conference as assigned.
b.   Recognizes responsibility as a hospital team member and keeps informed by reading notices and memos, attending professional meetings and conferences as scheduled and maintaining membership in professional organizations as applicable.
c.   Observes and carries out policies and procedures regarding infection control practices.                                                               d.   Utilizes Universal Precautions at all times.
e.   Adheres to hospital policy on the usage of Paid Time Off and Extended Illness Time.
f.   Reports to work on time, and if necessary, reports tardiness to appropriate person.
g.   Maintains a professional appearance, according to job requirements, at all times.
h.   Attended all required mandatory educational sessions.
i.   Adheres to infection control practices. Has completed required TB skin test's). 
j.   Assumes personal responsibility for ongoing continuing education and professional development.
k.   Accepts additional work assignments as assigned by supervisor. 
 

 

Education:

High school diploma or equivalent.

Work Experience:

Previous clinical experience.

License & Cert:

CPR required.
